Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / those "boys" with their crown jewels..

Hi owners of boy dogs
Hope I can be gross here and very sorry if you are about to eat - how much time is healthy for an adolescent dog to spend licking his bits? Ours is not constantly at it but sometimes he does it for a few minutes, then stops, then goes back to it, stops etc. I've checked it out with the vet and there is the occasional presence of [white]smegma which the vet told me to wipe off with a tissue but is there a more unobtrusive and quicker way to get rid of it? Dog is ok with me hassling him there but can get a bit grouchy when I don't do it quickly enough and I owe him lots of hugs afterwards. There seems to be no sign of infection and vet seems to believe he is just spending time cleaning it.
I grew up thinking dogs [and cats] were fascinated with their willies and never thought anything of it but wouldn't mind knowing what is normal willy time.
thanks
cissy

I let Hudson have his lick when it *needs* to be licked , but then I stop him from carrying on ....I just shout to STOP IT! and he does now ;) If I let him carry on he gets TOO excited and makes a mess on the carpet ..EEEEEEEEEEEEW!

Melody :)

boys will be boys :D
Let him keep it clean...its no bad thing...must admit I occassionally yell at my boys for over doing it but at least they aren't chewing the furniture when they are licking their bits!

Quest my lab doesn't clean himself!
If he wants his willy clean he goes and sit in front of Tiegan my rotti and plonks it in her face and she then cleans it for him.
I used to tell him off but have given up and she really doesn't mind.

When my chinese crested was a puppy he licked and chomped on his willy so much he actually inflamed it. Took him to the vets cos i thought there was something wrong but there wasn't the vet just said that sometimes over sexed males do get obsessed with their bits, poor boy had to wear one of the lampshade collars until the habit was broken and also needed cream for sorting out the inflamation, he didn't like that putting on i can tell you.Didn't mind the collar but oh boy the cream made his eyes water.

I have 4 males, 3 schips and a pomeranian. I don't mind when there's just 1 schip and the pom out, my 7 yr old spayed schip bitch keeps them clean, each to their own is what I say lol. Trouble starts when I've got 2 schips out and the pom ----------- they're just sooooo noisy about it! Slurping and smacking of lips drives me insane, especially when there's a girlie in season, we all know how deaf and brain dead a stud male becomes when it's 'that time'

lol at all the boys. I'm the only female in the house so I hope Lascaux doesn't start getting any ideas [not even for a magnum of Dom Perignon]!
