Hi :)

I have just started to show Saskia (1 year old husky) though at ringcraft this wek as we were waiting for ou turn in the ring, she got very jumpy, she kept leaping and flipping on her lead and trying to run oin the middle of the ring. This is not the first time she has done this, Im not sure if it is boredom or what. She seems so on edge I had to sit down with her to keep her still.

Also we had a new judge come in this week, when he went to go over her she got very scared as if it was her first time, he was very good with her and tried to calm her down but she was reaaly shakeing and she kept sitting down and every time he went to touch her she would start leaping about. She does sometimes trend to dip a little when a judge goes round her back end but never to this extreme. She is a very happy dog always jumping over me and Andi and playing rough with the others so I can not see why she gets so nervous. Other judges have gone over her and she has stopped totaly still where others have touched her and she is a wreck

any suggestions?

Welcome to my world :D

At least with the running and getting bored bit ...Hudson doesn't mind ANYONE going over him though ;) He also has to woooooo wooo when he trots (paces/runs/leaps) around the ring ;)

Mel

Does H get bored while waiting for his turn and start leaping about to?

What do you suggest I do about it, if I get her on a short lead she seems to get more scared, what a nightmare.

It was suggested to me that I let him relax when he is waiting to be looked over ..so we let him sit and I talk to him and give him bits of sausage. Have to watch him though as he can get a bit spooked when the person standing behind crowds you

;)

Thanks Mel

Trying to stop the tit bits in the ring as she keeps sniffing my pocket and will not concentrate, also when I stand her she keeps sitttin down so I have to kneel down hold lead in left hand and treat in front of nose in right hand, so I am trying to get her out of it so its a squeeky toy in pocket I give it a squeek when she starts to get bored. When she has finshed dragging me round the ring. and my turn is over I give her a treat then  spitz who would have them :cofused:

Heidi ...the person holding the ringcraft should help you with Saskia sitting when you try to stand her. What I used to do (and still have to sometimes  ) is I let H know I have something in my hand for him ..I then put my hands in front of my belly button area and I tell H to stand! If he goes to sit down , I say NO! and move back slightly ...then I repeat. When he stands I say good boy , stand and let him have the treat ..but he HAS to stand the whole time. I also make him stand before ANY treats ever ...just to reinforce the command.

I have very little ringcraft experience so this may be the blind leading the blind ;) More experienced people maybe will have a different , more effective method :D

That sounds very sensible Melody!!:D

I've found this often happens if people have carefully taught their dog to sit before treats, dinner etc (just as they've been told to  )....they then have to untrain it for the ring! :)

Heidi,

Probably not the case if she's a year old, but don't suppose she's due a season is she? Bitches can get very jumpy around this time.

Wouldnt get a Mal to do much UNLESS you had tidbits in your hand ;) I think some breeds you bait and some you dont

Same here. Treats should never be thrown (some breeds are naughty for this, and it is murder going in the ring after such a breed as our breed will get their noses down :(

I also think anything that can be distracting to others it is bad manners to take in the ring, like squeeky toys or clickers.
