Hi,

I don't have a dog at the moment but would really like to get involved with show handling. If I went along to my local club do you think I would get the opportunity to learn about handling with out having my own dog?

Thanks,
Jen

Hello Jen, There's no doubt that you can learn an awful lot by careful observation, and talking to people who seem to know what they're doing. There are also many books available on dog shows and handling, also it might be a good idea to get one or other of the weekly dog papers, Our Dogs or Dog World. Handling styles vary depending on the breed though, so hands on experience is essential. You will, I'm sure enjoy dog shows, and in no time at all you will be bitten by the bug!!

A young lady of my aquaintance has done just that, and is regularly shoing my friends Elkhound bitch, and other Elkhound owners that have more than one dog at a show are happy for her to handle their dog, as she seems to have a natural apritude, and they are happy to help a keen young person.

She has been to quite a few shows with me and another friend, and has helped show a couples Flatcoat at Open shows.
