Hi Alex,
Usually the best age to advertise a dog at stud is when he has had all the relevant health checks for his breed. A Dobermann needs a low hipscore, and should be eye-tested and tested for Von Willebrands disease. If he passes these checks, you then either contact his breeder (or other knowledgeable breed specialist) who should be able to look him over and tell you whether he is good enough to use at stud, or enter him in shows and see if he's good enough to make the grade.

Bitch owners will only want to use the best on their bitches!

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks very much for the information jeangeanie....how do I get him hip scored,,,,I know he has a slight overbite with his front teeth,,,I know some judges notice this amd some dont,,,,he had a slight eye run which the vet said was clear of infection ,,but shes going to check him when he goes back for his second jag,,i`m a bit worried he might have that disease you spoke of because the breeder we bought him of never got his jag and had him up to 16 weeks before selling him which has made me think he might have something wrong although he is off a good strong pedigree with national and international champs in his background ,,so i`ll wait and see and keep you posted ,,(if your interested in hearing his result) hope i`m wrong,,,,,is it the vet that I get to check him for von willbrands disease

Hi Alex,
Your vet will be able to x-ray his hips after he's a year old. The x-ray plate is sent away to be officially 'scored' and the result is published.

Other people on here will know a lot more about the various eye tests (these are checks for hereditary problems, not infections), and von Willebrands disease is like a form of haemophilia, again hereditary, not something he can catch.

Talk to your vet when you take him next, enjoy having him and have fun training him! Even if he turns out to be unsuitable as a stud, he's still your lovely dog! :)

Hi Alex

If you would like more information regarding von Willebrands Disease please contact me and I can also let you know who is doing the next Clinic. These are done by DNA test (cheek swab) not by a vets who use a different (and not definitive) test.
