My 14month old Ridgeback has had terrible "trotters" for 10 days,he has been to the vets twice but the treatment up to now has had no improvement:ie injections and tablets of (metronidazole) and to feed him on boiled chicken and white rice.He has been fed from day 1 on hills with no problem until 10 days ago,he is ok in himself but starting worry myself as he was 55kg 3 weeks ago now 53kg.Any usefull info would be welcome.
One of my dogs had a problem with gluten (found in rice) it may be worth checking by just giving chicken or fish for a day, a small amount of potato would bulk it out.
Hayley
but don't add ANYTHING, in the hope that you will improve flavor/palatability, as this defeats the object of a bland diet :)
Hope he recovers soon

Try some natural live yogurt as well - that'll rebalance his stomach bacteria, especially important if he's been having anti-biotics.

Charcoal biscuits can help!!!
Has your vet taken any samples to test to find the cause?
Has anything changed in your vicinity - sheep, cattle or deer moved into where you walk, anything been sprayed, eating salt covered snow (bit remote that one but it might make you think about the non-obvious)
Here is a site which may also help you to assist your vet in the diagnosis

The vet has taken samples waiting for results,I have took zim on completely differant walks and tried to eliminate certain things including his little bitch friend kept away for 48 hours.thanks for the link.
Hi Zimzam, don`t forget if you have started him on the cooked fish/chicken & rice diet to debone them first & cook the rice in the liquid from the fish/chicken & potato if you use it, you can boil a carrot & garlic clove with the chicken but discard the carrot when its cooked. If you have any of the cooking liquid over give it to him to drink as it`s full of nourishment. Scamlbed egg is good for a light diet, as well as the youhurt you can use actimel. Keep him on the light diet till your vet gets the results back, hope it`s not long.

Hi
I have mentioned this to the vet plus others:ie pancreas problems even hookworm,he is certain that we have eliminated alot of things it could be,the only thing that is slightly working food wise is (burns frozen tripe)which is alot slower going thru zims system.

We have a similar problem with our 9 year old Cocker - fed on Hills all his life with excellent results, suddenly developed chronic diarrhoea ( had for 3 weeks now ) . Having tests at vet, on bland diet.
What was the outcome with your dog. Any tips outthere

here is a suggestion ....
try buying some potted fresh chives from the supermarket (i know tescos do them) and break some off and chop erm up and put them into his finished meal on the top ...it will clear his trots up ..i promise :) my rough collie had a problem with the trots he got them every other day ..until we added chives (got the tip from a doggy vet site) and after a week he was ok ...we kept up with the chives for a month and then gradualy stopped putting them in and it seemed to have done the trick. .... my vet also didnt know what was causing his trots and he also did many tests with no diagnosis :(
anyway have a go and persivear with it for at least a week to see the benifits
hope things get better poor doggy :(

Hi,
Just to add to the above, i live in Exeter, Devon, and my GSD caught this Diarrhoea bug and lasted for about a week, after trip to vets to make sure he was all right, starved him for 24hrs, then Chicken and Rice, now seems a lot better.
Is this a Uk wide problem now then?

your story sounds the same as mine I live in shropshire,my dog has had tummy problems since she was a pup but never lasting this long, this is the worst case yet,she is having blood tests and I am awaiting the results in the meantime she is on anti boitics, these arnt working either,I will try the live yogurht that was mentioned though, it works for me so why not for our dogs!!! I have put my dog on boiled rice and fresh chicken,I might add a little mash to bulk it up a little,I feel for everyone with this problem,my dog lives in so I havent had a decent nights sleep for over a week!!! I will ask other local dog owners to see if there are many more cases of this "bug" going around,I have never known anything like it with my dog before, good luck I hope you get it sorted soon kazco100

I don't know if this will help. But my retriever had problems for years with an upset stomach. We tried everything, cut various things out of her diet. We were told she may have a pancreatic enzyme insufficiency which resulted in her not having enough enzyme to digest her food properly. This meant that undigested food was collecting in her gut and consequently attracting bugs and bacteria thus causing the upset. That's why Metronidozole often works, because it kills the bacteria feeding on the undigested food. After all sorts of trials and tribulations, a canny vet actually made a very simple suggested. Feed her several small meals a day, that her system can cope with. This has worked a treat. We feed her half a tin of chappie in the morning with a couple of low fat small biscuits, the same at lunch time, the same in the early evening and another meal later on. It seems her system can cope with this quantity of food and she is able to digest it. We also give her tuna in springwater and the odd spoonfull of
goats milk yohurt. We do steer away from any fatty foods though. Good luck hope you resolve your probs. Annie.
