Topic Dog Boards / Health / Flea Protection?

Hi,

I am new here, so I am sorry if this has already been posted elsewhere on the board!

We took one of our Westies (Boo/7 months old) to the vets today as we saw a 'grey thing' clinging on to her back and skin. The vet said that it was a Tick.

Although we use Frontline every 3 months and comb her daily, he said we should use Frontline/Stronghold monthly or every 6months.

We decided to switch to Stronghold and are using it on her and our other dog (Cassie/4 Months) monthly - is this to frequently in your opinion?

Also, can you reccomend any anti flea/tick sprays/methods for the home (like the carpet etc.) as I read somewhere that there are 10 times more fleas living in your carpet than on your dog. With 2 young dogs, we probably have quite a flea-infested house!

Thank You very much if you can help in anyway at all.

Thanks!

Have used Programme for a few years now on my gang of six
One tablet per month - if fleas bite dog because of treatment the fleas can't breed end of flea problem.
Most of sprays designed for house flea problems will get rid of fleas but only some are effective against larvae & eggs, so don't forget to read the instructions before buying.

Can't comment on Frontline or Stronghold never used them.
Check the instructions before increasing your use of them, especially since your dogs are still quite young.
Have you seen any fleas or flea dirt on your dogs if not, Frontline obviously has been doing its job, mind you, fleas do have their season & warmer weather should stir them.
Was it just this tick that you found?
Had you been anywhere near sheep? - I think that is the most common sort of tick that dogs might pick up.
Ticks can be removed by yourself but you do have to be very careful that you do get the tick off in one piece and not leave any of the mouth parts behind as then the site can become infected.

HI, Stronghold does not "do" Ticks, your vet should know that!! I would use the Frontline every 2 months.

Hiya , for protection against Ticks , Frontline Spot On has to be applied once a month even though it will protect for upto 3 months against fleas. If you read the instructions it does tell you this but it is easy to miss it ;)

Hudson had a tick when he was younger and we were using advantage , I changed to Frontline and have used it monthly ever since , no ticks :). You can get a good household flea killer to treat your house (if you find that there are fleas in the home) from the Vet ..you will need to do everywhere that the dogs go and also wash ALL the bedding etc that they use.

HTH
