Oliver is a 5 month old viszla who is developing in all the right ways, is generally well behaved, toilet trained and is just finishing his first set of training classes where he has done not too badly. He is well socialised both with people and other dogs, but is very submissive to larger dogs. He will literally lie and roll over when another larger dog comes near. Is this usual, or is it something he will grow out of, or can we do something with his training ? This is my first dog & I love him to bits - just want to make sure that I am doing the best thing for him.

He'll most likely grow out of this - he knows he's still a baby, and there's
no way he wants the "big boys" to pick on him! One word of caution - if you have him castrated before he grows out of this, chances are he'll do it forever.

Thanks. We've had loads of advice about whether to have him castrated or not. Although he's a pedigree, we have no plans to breed him. Does castration really alter a dog that much ?

I've known several dogs whose development (physical and mental) "freezes" when they are castrated, and they never grow up to look masculine.

Hi
Wouldn't worry about the submission bit, just as Jeangeanie said he'll grow out of it - just reminding any older dog that he is only a little baby.
Know this site is very helpful to loads of people but there is a discussion group devoted to Vizslas which you might like to join - loads of fun & advice from experienced & new Vizsla owners whose little darlings have got them wrapped around their little paws! :D
Not sure if I can give the address on here so just send me an e-mail at Lnglysj@aol.com and I'll be pleased to give you the address.
