I am not sure with the crate training..I have been doing it for a couple weeks now it is not going bad at all..I take her out every 1 hr or so and when she is done she waits by the door and I can see her through the cat flap. The problem is will she ask eventually to go out? She does not bark ,a soft squeet maby for the most ..but do dogs usually sit by the door to go out ..or bark ..and how long do you think I can go on not trusting her on the floor space ?..how long do they take to 'grasp' the outside thing she is 5 months ..as I am not sure I do not let her walk on the floor she sits on the sofa with me or right by my foot in the kitchen or in her crate when I am not looking .. she is not 'roming' anymore as I am afraid she will do it as she did one a week ago :)do I every so often leave her and see ? or wait longer as not to get her used to doing it on the floor ?Sorry to be so long winded but I am trying to clear this up and I want to know what to expect ..thanks

It is a good idea to go outside with your dog so that you can reward her with a food treat/game and loads of praise as soon as she goes so that she associates it with something good so that it is something she wants to do. When she 'goes' inside (as she is bound to do at some time unfortunately - she is still only a child really) just ignore her and clean it up making no fuss. If you ensure she knows that going outside is good thing and going inside doesn't bring any reward she will soon start to ask to go outside.
There are bound to be accidents as she is only a child - human children sometime wet the bed at 7 years old - just don't make a big deal about it. The best puppy book i have read is "the perfect puppy" by Gwen Bailey. It might be worth reading as it covers all aspects of bringing up a puppy.
good luck

To encourage her to bark at the door - when she is sitting by it waiting for you to open it - talk to her in a really cherry voice. Say things like "What do you want?" "Do you want to go out?" try and get her excited so she makes a noise. When she does open the door giving her lots of praise. Eventually she'll learn to bark to open the door. I had to teach both of mine to do this.

Gus
is also 5 months . He will wait by the door to go out but will not make a noise . I can usually tell by his actions when he wants to go out side .
I reward him when he goes outside and i think this has helped alot with his training

I dont know whether it'll be worth it for someone who hasnt got cats but my puppy just sticks her head through the catflap so we can hear the clatter.
She does the same to come in if the wind has blown the door shut or something.

Although if we go to a house without a catflap she will just sit at the door and whine

Thanks a lot for all your help ! Everyone agrees on the reward and I will do that ..I do carry on all stupid when she goes but I do not always make a point to give her a doggie treat :( Shame on me !! So I will do that...hope she will bark or rattle the cat flap to let me know as she is so silent I am wondering how I will know when I am upstairs etc...thanks any way ...

My 7 month pup won't bark to go out if I'm in the room with her,she just stands by the door and looks at me. However, if I'm upstairs or in the kitchen she'll bark. However, thi smeans that if she's barking at the neighbours walking past I rush downstairs to her! She must think that this is great fun!!
