Hi,
We were wondering if any Mal owners could recommend some good books that they have personally found helpful. So far we have:
A new owners guide to Alaskan Malamutes by M.J. & A. Holabach
Alaskan Malamutes by Bill LeKernec
Alaskan Malamutes by Sikora.
We have also ordered This is the Alaskan Malamute by Joan M. Brearley. We are trying to find The Alaskan Malamute by John Gordon but as it is now out of print, we are having trouble locating a copy :-(
Any suggestions for further reading would be most helpful :-)
Phil
ps - We live in England and have found that some American books use different descriptions and methods to books that are published in England, so any English books would be great (or American if they are really good ones).

There is a good book called The Alaskan Malamute:Yesterday and Today by Barbara Brooks and Sherry Wallis. It is an american book, we call it the bible. You can order it from WHSmiths the only thing is that it costs about £50. But it is a good book really. Some people prefer the book called this is the alaskan malamute by joan mcdonald brearly.

Theres only one book for me and thats The History and Management of the Alaskan Malamute by Janet Edmonds, A British book written by Jannat Al Haddad who IMO is the best person to ask anything mally. Unfortunately it is out of print as well and loads of people are on the look out for a copy. I have all the others but never pick them up but this one is thumbed to death :)

I know of someone who got a copy from the author herself. She writes the Alaskan Malamute write up, in the rare breeds section of Dog World most weeks and you can find her contact tel number there, or alternatively get her adress from the Alaskan Malamute Club Of UK.:)

Its the Holy Grail of the Malamute world ;) :D
I check the 2nd hand bookshops on the net every week , but still no luck .....yet :D

My copy NEVER leaves my sight. I have referred to it so many times. It helped me to decide to get a mal, I read it and decided I could cope ( :D) then when I had Floyd I was rooting though the pages once a week and it helped me again when I had the pups. And no I don't lend it out :D :D :D

I agree with Jayne, Jannat's book is the best book, and like Jayne, my copy NEVER goes past the front door! If you want to read it, you'll have to visit me!
The Alaskan Malamute Yesterday and Today is also very good, and has excellent tips on grooming and showing your Malamute. It also has a very interesting section on the history of the breed. I have seen it sometimes on sale secondhand from places like Amazon, if you do not want to pay the very hefty price.
Most of the other books I have seen (and have) contain only basic information on the breed, the rest being virtually the same as the rest of the breed books in that series, only with the pictures and breed names being changed.

Did you want reading material or a hefty one to throw at the mal? :d :d :d
