I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea how much i should expect to pay for my lhasa's teeth to be scaled under General anaesthetic? I have never had to have this done before and am not sure if I am going to be paying over the odds at my current vet? I have been quoted nearly £200 and feel this is very expensive. She has no health problems and is 5 years old.

I brush the teeth of my lot fairly often, although not daily or anything. Even so they do still scale up a little. I bought a dental scaler from a trade stand at a dog show. The dogs are now well used to me fiddling about in their mouths. The scaler is very easy to use and I get sooooo much satisfaction at chiping off that scale. The results are great and no vet bill.

yes i am realising now that i should have perservered earlier with it and will try in future, however I need to get her teeth in a good state before I start. Her gums are apparently becoming slightly infected too.

£200 does seem like an awfully high price, given that the procedure is not invasive. My vet charges half that for spaying, which is a fairly major operation.

If you feel you are being overcharged, get cost from other vets in the area and compare prices. We did that when we had our bitch's hip score done + had her teeth cleaned at the same time

i got chrged £1oo and to be cleaned but any treatment needed is extra

I have just been to another vet and been quoted £70! Not sure about the quality of the practice though so I will be visiting local practices until i find one with a good balance of price and facilities. Thanks for everyones advice. My original vet has definately lost a customer!

I am a bit worried!

My vet quoted just £80 for spaying, we have only been with them for a short while and they 'seem' o.k , but this price seems awfully cheap - is it?

You could ring other vets in your area & ask for a quote for spaying & see how their prices compare to your own vet.

My friend Deborah lives in Oxford , she took her much loved and ancient cat to the vets last week. A 10 minute consultation and a routine blood test later she was presented with a bill for £100 :( :Mad:

Debs works for the NHS and says a rountine blood test on a human would cost £18

YIKES!! A year or so ago we had about 3 blood tests done, 2-3 urine tests, and a few other things, 2-3 prescriptions and about 5 vet visits and the whole bill for the 4 weeks of treatment only came to about £170 - most of which was covered by insurance. £100 for one test and one consultancy seems WAY high.
