Topic Dog Boards / Health / Incontinance following spaying?
- By hazel30 [gb] Date 18.03.03 13:23 UTC
Hi,
We will be getting a new Boxer puppy(bitch) in the next few weeks and although we have had boxers before never a bitch.I have been reading and researching about spaying and trying to decide whether to have it done or not.My biggest concern is that I have read that Boxers are more prone to incontinance following spaying.Has anyone any experience or knowledge on this subject as I have been given lots of conflicting advice(vets, breeders etc).I don't want any puppies but I do want what is best for her.Any advice would be most welcome,

My own view is that if a dog is kept very fit, lean and healthy then there is less likelihood of a bitch developing any incontinence problems - but of course there is always that risk.

I too have heard Boxers have a problem with this - difficult! Hopefully there will be some knowledgeable Boxer people on the board who will be able to give you more information.

Hazel,

Supposedly if you spay after a bitch's first season they are less likely to be incontinent.

Personally I have very limited experience. One bitch I had was spayed after her first season and she only became incontinent after she was about 10 year old. And then only very rarely. One bitch I had was spayed before her first season and she only become incontinent after she reach about 11 years old, again, I could count the times on one hand.

My vet will not spay until after the first season -- and it has nothing to do with incontinence. Dogs are not fully mature physically until well after their first season and spaying them beforehand can effect maturity.

How long does it take for the bitch to recover from being done?

If all goes well she should be completely back to normal in about a fortnight. :)

Thanks very much :)
