Topic Dog Boards / General / Brown Patches on Lawns
- By Dianne [us] Date 18.03.03 12:06 UTC
Hello

I have seen advertised in the paper a product called Green-UM which is totally natural and claims to stop brown patches appearing on lawns when dogs wee on them. Has anyone used this product and can verify that it works and is safe for dogs, or alternatively, has anyone given their dog something else that works. I really don't want to give my dog anything that isn't good for her, but it would be nice for her to be able to go anywhere in the garden!!

Any suggestions would be great

Thanks
Dianne

Hi Dianne
I have never heard of this product but would also be interested to know whether it works. We've never had a brilliant lawn but the brown patches do make it look much worse. I had a quick look at www.headstartpets.co.uk and, as well as the tablets, you can also get a spray. Perhaps it might be worth trying that first (?)

I usually have a large watering can at the ready and if I see one of them wee, I quickly put some water on the spot to dilute it. It does mean its hard to relax in the garden and I have to be out there when they are but it stops the lawn looking a mess. I love my dogs but I also love gardening. It would be great if there was a product that works. Its funny but have you noticed how many dogs wee in the parks and yet the grass there never seems to have brown patches. hm makes you wonder. I'll keep reading your replies encase someone comes up with the answer.

I think the patches on our lawns are more noticeable than in the park because our lawns are smaller (mine is anyway!). I used to try to returf the patches, but then I found that if I just left them, after a few weeks the grass recovered, and was actually greener than before....but green patches are nicer than brown! Perhaps it's the composition of my bitches' urine, but this is one occasion when it has paid me to be a lazy gardener. :)

hi jeangenie,

how long did it take for the grass to come back - the other half is complaining abou tour patches at the mo

Hi Alex, it did take several weeks, but as the grass is starting to grow again now (it's Spring! hurrah!) it should soon catch up. In the meantime, water the wee as soon as you can - and water the patches as well.

Haven't tried it myself - after this winter, I've barely got any grass, never mind brown patches! - but tomato juice added to dog's food is meant to reduce the effect.

Hi
Yes this product does work! Although I haven't used it myself I have seen the proof, my next door neighbour's garden.
However a while ago I recommended this product and was shot down for it. Like I said I haven't used this product myself, but if ever i had this problem then I wouldn't hesitate, as I know it does work.
Alison:)
