Hi, I'm breeding my 3 yr old bitch for the first time. I spoke to my vet about prescribing Synolex to my bitch, to protect her and the stud dog from passing any harmful bacteria to one another. However, my vet prescribed me Ceporex instead (14 x 250mg tablets, to be taken twice daily, for seven days, starting on the seventh day of her season), as she said they did not stock Synolux.
Has anyone had any expereince with this drug ? I really would welcome your experiences. Also, what if my bitch is still undergoing the 7 day course when she is ready for mating ? Will she be able to mate safely while still taking the drug ? Will the stud dog be protected too ? Does anyone have any reservations about Ceporex, and how exactly does it differ from Synolux ?
Many Thanks
Dina

HI, have no fear Ceporex is good stuff and cleared up an infection that i somehow got in my kennel some years ago. All my bitches were missing and the cause was found and Ceporex given. They all went on to have good litters afterwards. I guess the stud dog is protected because if the bitch has been on it for the required time before mating then she will be infection free.
When my vet prescribed it, the bitch stayed on Ceporex for the whole of the season - 21 days or so, as they were swabbed on day 2 of the season and the course of Ceporex started straight away. I would have thought if you were giving Ceporex to protect the bitch from a possible stud dog infection then she should stay on them for 3 or 4 days after the last mating, rather than stop at mating time. I dont know how it differs from Synolux as I have never been given that, but imo you can give Ceporex without any worries. I have never noticed any side effects either.

Hi Westie Lover,
Thank you for your invaluable advice. I have since spoken to my vet about this and she has assured me both my bitch & the stud dog will be protected too. I have started the course of Ceporex now, and we are hoping this will be the start of a healthy first pregnancy for my girl.
Thank you again,
Dina

You're welcome. :-) Hope all goes well.

not sure which part of South wales your at but we are near Llanelli and I get Synulox from my vet. There is little or no difference between the 2..Synulox I belive is Amoxicillin which is a broad spectrum penicillin and Ceporex is Cephalexin which is a cephalosporin .It was probably given as it's a more specific drug used on urinary tract infections and the like
Here endeth the lesson
And yes I work in a pharmacy
Never have guessed it would you!!!!lol

Thank you, Kia Mummy,
Thanks - that makes sense. We live in Pontypridd, but I used to live in & around Llanelli. I'm an "adopted" Kidwelly girl !
Just down the road from me......I actually live in Burry Port but no-ones ever heard of it so I say LLanelli as at least there is a chance of someone knowing where that is
