Merlin the Giant Schnauzer has osteoarthritis (sorry about dodgy spelling) He's 12yrs old.
Any help or advice gratefully received.
What sort of help do you need? My Lab Cross has osteoarthritis - he is only 4 though - we have tried various glucosamine supplements that other people swear by, but these have done little for him. We have had the best results from swimming - we are lucky to have an excellent local pool - he will always limp but his quality of life has dramatically improved and he can enjoy normal walks now.
All the best, Hayley
PS I used a magnetic collar on my old Lab and it worked a treat, but unfortunately it doesn't work for all dogs, including Dylan
Hayley thanks for your reply.
Merlin is my sister-in-laws' dog, and is receiving hydrotherapy, which does seem to help a little. I do apologise if my original post was rather vague in using the term, help.
When I posted it was in the hope that someone could suggest , perhaps a homeopathic or some other remedy that could help him.
We appreciate that at 12yrs old he's going to have some arthritic problems, so sorry to hear that your 4yr old has osteoarthritis,it seems so unfair for one so young!

Various homoeopathic remedies available - depends on symptons - see if you can get copy of Homoeopathy for pets by Goerge MacLeod - got my copy from Health Food Shop
ISBN NO 0 907688 00 4 published by Homoeopathic Development Foundation Ltd, 19a Cavendish Square, London W1 - don't know if still correct address as I have had my copy for donkey years.
Following taken from above book
Arthritis - worse from movement followed by improvement on further exercise - remedy Rhus.tox
Use this one with great effect with my first dog.
Worse for exercise - remedy Bryonia - using this currently for an 10 year dog - only just started with this one.
Hope above might help

Hi Liberty, we use a Glucosamine liquid complex called Synflex and I can absolutely guarantee 100% that it works. We use it on our Mastiff and within 10 days he was running around like a puppy. We have tried other Glucosamine products and I have to admit have had very limited if any success. If you send me an email I will gladly give you the supplying companies details, it only costs £24 for a months supply which is delivered to your home.

I suffer from the same condition, after an accident, I help control it diet and homoeopathy. Try giving him fish that contain omega 3 fatty acids, such as mackerel and sardines, a little olive oil on his food won't go amiss either. Evening Primrose oil in capsule form is also very good. If he does seem in some pain after exercise then give him the homoeopathic remedy arnica 30c. I give that to all my dogs if they have a bump or a bruise, it brings down swelling and inflamation. Osteoarthritis is very painful which, in my case, attacks the body with sharp pain on movement, but not moving makes it far worse, so try and keep him moving and the best of luck.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I've passed them onto my sister-in-law, and now hopefully Merlin will be able to enjoy his 'twilight years' :)
