Does anyone know how I can contact DLRC? I have been searching for a young Cocker Spaniel bitch for 6 months now and have seen one advertised in Lancs, but apparently she is not KC registered. She sounds a really nice dog and at 9 months is the sort of age I was hoping for BUT I wanted to be able to do a little showing and of course need to be KC reg for this. I therefore need to make further enquiries about her before I travel the 4 hours to go and see her. If I can trace her breeder Mr.Mrs James. Nutshaw Kennels. Burnley.Lancs. I can find out about her parentage , health issues etc. Sadly I cannot find a number for them anywhere, so thought I could try the DLRC,any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks Jackie

Hi Jackie
Don't know how experienced you are with showing - but it is unlikely that you will pick up a good show quality bitch at that age. The breeder will be looking to keep and use her themselves if she is of show quality. If you do find one - then be prepared to pay a very high price for her. Certainly a significant amount more than you would pay for one without papers. If you want a dog for show - I would recommend finding a reputable breeder of proven show quality stock and be prepared to have to wait for the right pup to come along. You could have to go on a waiting list. There are loads of pet quality Cockers about, many KC reg - but doesn't mean they'll do well at show, and as you know none KC reg ones that can't be shown.
Contacting the breeders of this young bitch you have heard of will not give her the registration she would need to be shown. If she's not reg'd and you want to show - you really need to look elsewhere.
If you let me know what area you live in - I can give you the phone number/s for breed club secretaries in your area. They can put you in touch with show quality breeders and help you find the right dog for you.

Hi Jackie
Don't want to put a dampener on your enthusiasm, but if you really want a young Cocker to show, then it is extremely unlikely that this unregistered bitch would be of suitable quality to show (even if you could find & persuade her original breeder to register her with the KC). I have been in Cockers for nearly 20 years & haven't heard of Nutshaw Kennels so I'm assuming these breeders breed solely for the pet market & if they don't register their stock with the KC, then it's extremely unlikely that they would have gone in for any kind of health screening & their stock will probably not be show quality. There is a big difference in quality between Cocker pups produced by someone who breeds unregistered pups to supply the pet market & those produced by an experienced show breeder - Cockers are such a competitive breed as far as shows are concerned that you really need to buy from a show breeder, preferably one who eye-tests their dogs etc & pays close attention to good temperament
Hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in :-) Sorry I don't know the number of the DLRC - not an organisation I have much faith in!

Nutshaw Kennels sell MANY breeds, it is not a place I would ever go near for a dog. I would suspect as well that if she came from there and is not KC registered then she could not be KC registered. Sorry Jackie, I agree with Jane on this.

Thanks everyone for your advice and support on this one. I think really I knew what you were going to say because I would probably give the same sort of advice myself. I guess it is just that I am keen to get a slightly older bitch, and of course for reasons already stated they are just so hard to come accross so I was just hoping!! Guess I'll just have to be patient............unless of course any of you hear of anything!!

Hi Jackie
Have you thought of contacting Mrs Maris=Bray ?
I know she always had nice dogs when I used to show my beardies years ago & I know she is still showing now

There is no reason why you shouldn't find a slightly older bitch good enough to show. Quite a few breeders will 'run on' a puppy before deciding whether to keep it or not and will part with it at 8 or 9 months. It won't be the next Crufts winner (the breeder wouldn't be parting with it if it was!!) but you may well have fun with it at open shows, and possibly be in the cards at Champ shows even if not in first place. If you could attend a few shows and meet as many people as possible you may strike lucky. Good luck with your search and let us know when you do find one.

If you contact the following - they'll be able to put you in touch with some breeders:-
Midland Cocker CLub - Mr Reg Pain - 0121 453 3215
N Midlans and eastern Counties Cocker Club - Mrs J Pretty - 01283 820867
East Anglian Cocker Club - Mrs S Sawko - 01480 212459
These people will be able to put you in touch with good breeders - show people with success and within your locality. Alternatively - if distance is no object - then ask for their advice as to who they would recommend. It really depends just how promsing a pup you want.

I wouldn't have one from there. They are always advertising in the Manchester Evening News. They could have good dogs, but I'm extremely wary when they have a no. of different breeds. Also if they are DLRC registered I doubt that they will be KC reg.
Hope you find one that you want.

we took a lab into rescue recently bought from Nutshaw and had a dog lovers registration ( Not worth the paper its written on) the lab looked nothing like a quality lab in fact looked like a cross be very careful.follow the advise of the other posters

Leigh delete me if this will get me into trouble!!!
Personally, I would have nothing to do with this registration scheme. It is run basically to allow registration of puppy farmed and other irresponsibly bred stock, to give the impression that they are good stock.
We have had dealings with the results of these registrations, where a bitch was bred every season, we got the KC to stop registering, and this outfit took over. It is run by the people who have a large puppy supermarket who buy litters wholesale. They also tell the bitch buyers that if they want to breed, they will put them in touch with a male owner, and take all the pups to sell. As in our breed there is only one outfit selling to them the parents would likely be brothers and sisters!

Hi Jackie,
I remember a series of postings on the old un-moderated board that revealed just what sort of a place Nutshaw and its DLRC scheme was. I strongly agree with the others in advising you to avoid a pup from here.
Pammy above offers you a contact with a cocker breed club - far better to get your pup this way! You'll be a very desirable customer to a reputable breeder needing to home an older pup - I got my last pup in this way - she was one of two being 'run on' - very common! This way you'll get a healthy pup, a KC registration (the only registration that enables you to show or breed) a genuine pedigree and a permanent support system in the breeder for those times when you need to know 'why is my dog doing...' or 'how do I fill in my show entry form...' etc etc.
The DLRC just takes your money - an over the normal amount as I recall, says goodbye and hopes to goodness it never sees you again, provides you with a dog whose health may be suspect due to unscrupulous breeding methods ( my own parents' dog from there developed legge perthes disease - cost them a fortune!) and no recognisable registration.
Try Pammy and avoid potential dissapointment and heartache! thats my two pence worth!
Good luck to you - let us know what you decide! its always nice to hear about new babies.

Again thanks everyone for your interest. I am going to take your advice and contact my local Cocker clubs and try and find a breeder with a pup available that has been 'run on'. Although I have been to many shows as a trade stand and with welfare organisations I have never actually done any showing! (Apart from fun classes at rescue shows) and I am really keen to try my hand at it. I am not looking for the next crufts champion..........yet!! just a nice bitch that I can have fun and learn with, and of course temperament, health and type are all very important - and hopefully I will find a breeder who may be able to offer advice and encouragement along the way ( and of course I can continue to visit the boards). Thanks again to you all, I'll let you know how we go!!!

i have just got my computer and was looking up puppies, i was interested to see what it said about nutshaws as i know several people who have bought pups there and the pups have died within a week of fetching them home.
is there anything that can be done to close this place down?
ive also heard that there is crates on the premises whish lead you to believe the pups are also shipped in
