Topic Dog Boards / General / will not poo outside

Hi Guys :)

A friend of mine has a 6 mth old lab pup. She is housetrained etc but during the night without fail she poos 3 times. She doesn't wee or anything just poos. She has a dog flap and the 2 other dogs use that at night but she won't.

She has tried giving her her last feed at different times to see if it makes a difference, but nothing seems to work. Is there anything she could try to stop this? Its really getting her down now as she comes down to a real mess every morning.

I know she is only a pup still but the frustrating thing is, she uses the flap to go for a wee and there is never any wet patches in the house, she just seems to not want to poo outside for some reason.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received :)

Hi Ali

She's not making the association with the toilet being outdoors so your friend will have to start again with basics to try and break the habit. Indoors is her toilet in her eyes and you will have to change the way she thinks to teach her otherwise.
I would suggest that she gets a crate and pops her in there overnight. She may not want to soil her immediate sleeping area so that may be incentive to keep clean or at least the mess will be contained. As she is doing three overnight  I would initially get up through the night a couple of times to give her the opportunity of toileting. She's used to doing it then. Loads and loads of praise if she does!
