Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood in puppies stool,.. HELP!
- By icynemesis [us] Date 17.03.03 03:10 UTC
I have a 4 month old female mini doxi and i have had her now a month. She has been on Science Diet puppy food, and for all intense and purposes she is doing fine. However I have noticed little bubbles in her stool and blood. Her stools are sometimes normal and then sometimes runny and scour like. There has also been blood around her rectum after she has a bowl movement. This is not everytime she goes potty. It is like it clears up for a day or two and then the blood appears again. Stating from the breeder she has had her puppy wormer shots. I am wondering if it could possibly be the puppy food. Any help anyone could give me I would be soooo greatful. Thank you, Chrystal

It's not the food. Take your puppy to the vet ASAP and bring a sample of her stool if you are able to do so. She probably has a bug of some kind (meaning bacteria or a virus) and the longer you wait the harder it will be to eradicate.

Re puppy wormer "shots". In the Uk worming is usually done by mouth, or occasionally via drop-on's on the coat - are you sure the puppy has been wormed? Dont panic, sometimes there is a little blood in poo, its not always a dangerous infection. But I would go along to the vet with a stool sample to be sure. If the pup has no diarrea(sp)/sickness it is unlikely to be very serious. If there is no infection you could try giving charcoal ( level teaspoon in one meal a day - powdered from the chemist for food use) or a couple charcoal biscuits, though you may need to grind them up as the ones I've seen are quite big for a small pup. If she were mine I would put her on a diet of cooked chicken ( de boned carefuly) and boiled plain wholemeal rice temporarily til her tummy settles down. then return to the Hills, if it happens again then a permanent change of diet may be needed. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply :) I put her on boiled hamburger and rice last night and today. Her stools have returned to normal with no blood. I did call the vet and because she is exibiting no other signs of sickness, she agreed with the boiled hamburger and rice for now, and also suggested another dog food not soooo processed,.. it's called Nutro. She was pooping A LOT which was telling me she was not absorbing any of the Science Diet. Will try this Nutro and the hamburger and rice for a few days and see how she does. Thank you and Stacy for your help :)

Chrsytal,

Try soaking the food in water until it is soft, even if you switch to Nutro. It will be easier and faster for the dog to digest if you do.

I want to thank everyone for their help. It seems like ancient news now, but we did see the vet and she had Giardia. She is all better now and has gained weight. The Nutro puppy food seems to be the right ticket. And as far as her stools are concerned,... she is back to normal!! :) However I have a new problem that has reared it's ugly head,... Demodex Mange :( I made a new post with all the info.

I would imagine the infection may well have pulled her immune system down, thereby causing a flare up with the Demodectic mange mites. With luck after they are cleared up, and the immune system is back to normal you should hopefully have a trouble free pup. It soes take a while for a puppy to have a fully operational immune system, and a large challenge like this can casue this to happen.
