I would like to hear from anyone who keeps 2 male german shepherds I have a 4 year old GSD male with a lovely temperment, loyal and great with children, he is very playfull with other dogs and puppies, we are going to have another GSD puppyin a few weeks time as he is only 4 weeks old at the moment this puppies parents are both lovely tempered and family reared I am going to be very carefull not to push my dogs nose out? and treat him as no 1 etc.. I have one worry about 2 males not getting on even though we will do everything as correct as possible within our loving home? I would love to hear from someone with 2 males or females with any advice?? with many thanks Leanne

Hi Leanne
I have 2 male GSD's a 2 year old and a 17 week old and they get along fine. The pup may try to be dominant of the older dog when the time comes, but they do generally sort it out between themselves. I have had 3 male dogs living together before and they all knew their ranking order. The youngest did try it on a bit at about 18 months of age, but was soon put in his place and life was back to normal. As long as you show them that you are "Top Dog", then you should have no problems.

Hi Krys

Thank you ever so much for your reply I feel alot happier now, I agree with what you said about me being 'top dog' I have never had a problem with our dog he has always known is place in our 'pack' and has never tried to rule any of us he is a real gem! I am sure he will accept the new pup as long as he is not pushed aside which he definately won't be thanks again

I have had two female GSDs at one time with no problem between them. The only problem the younger GSD had was with my Yorkie, who bossed her around. :-)

I have two male GSD's, a two year old and a one year old, I only got the one year old a few weeks ago and was worried about how the two dogs would get along, luckily the younger one still acts like a puppy and so Merlin, my older boy couldnt care less about him! I think it may help if you have one dog neutered though ( best to have the pup at about a year old done while the adult dog is still dominant over him or the older dog if the pup becomes dominant ). I have neutered Lupin now and I think it has helped as he doesnt have loads of testosterome raging through him now!!

Hi, I have males & females living together with no problems exept when we have seasons or pups!
Generally males can live together no problem unless you introduce a bitch or they experience stud work.
My stud dogs accept young males fine until they reach the age of puberty and pose a potential threat.
I would probably get one or both castrated unless you plan on breeding.

Good luck,
Tiggy

Hi miss tiggywig

Thanks for your advice, my older dog has already been castrated so I think I will have to have the younger dog castrated as well, I don't really want him trying to dominate my older boy when he matures do you think this is the best option? even if there are no problems with them anyway? I don't intend to stud him out either. Thanks again and to everyone else for their comments it is very interesting and very helpfull!!

with thanks

Hi Leanne,

Don't be in too much of a rush to get your youngster castrated. Just see how the land lies between them as the pup matures, as it may be unneccessary.
I'm a firm believer that dogs shouldn't be castrated just for the sake of it, & if there are no problems between them I would leave it.
Particularly as your older dog is already 'done', I would just use your own common sense in this case.
I'm sure you'll have loads of fun with your GSD's as they are a fantastic breed to own.

Tiggy
