Reading the other thread about Spirit in the Sky prompts me to ask what was the first record you ever bought. Mine was 'Teenage Idol' by Ricky Nelson. (Circa 1963) I played it over and over until I knew all the words. I also still have 2 Elvis 78rpm's Hound Dog and Heartbreak Hotel, although I acquired them later.
Nowadays I'm more into classical and David Gray.

Paranoia?? Nah, it was called Paranoid. I bought that one too and played it to death :D
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 17.03.03 10:05 UTC
Oops ..sorry ...Senior Moment there :D

I remember my pa giving me *the look* and asking , scathingly , if I *knew* what Paranoid actually meant and what a stupid title for a song ;) Mine was on the vertigo lable , which was groovy as it was a black and white spiral affair that would send you dizzy as you watched the 45 go round and round :D

Records are far more nostalgic than CDs I think .
I can remember saving all my money until i had enough for the one i wanted and then sitting on the bus home reading the sleeves on the records feeling really pleased with myself .
The first single i bought with my own money was teardrop explodes Reward .
I played it so much i'm surprised i never wore the words off the vinyl.
Happy days
:)

The first one I bought (or rather gave my big brother the money and he went on the bus and bought it for me!) was "Little Children" by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas (round about 1963). Coincidentally that was the first record my husband bought too! :)
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 15.03.03 16:27 UTC
Oh I LOVED that record ...I remember them playing that on Thank Your Lucky Stars ...pop show from 63 :)

Melody- showing her age :D

I did have a Beatles e.p. at the same time as my Thomas The Tank Engine records (read by Johnny Morris), but the first one I bought was Gypsies Tramps and Thieves by Cher. :)

Hi, you are all too young!!. My first record was Diana by Paul Anka and as it was the ONLY record i had for many months I played it over and over. My sister who shared a bedroom with me got so fed up that she eventually stepped on it, accidentally she claimed, though I have my doubts. The main reason that I loved this song was that it was/is my name.
- By Jane Gordon [gb] Date 15.03.03 18:02 UTC
Little Arrows by Leapy Lee, well I was very young! I believe he is still going strong in Majorca, singing in bars.

i'm just as bad mine was David Cassidy- Daydreamer. Makes me feel old, worse still i've still got it!
- By John [gb] Date 19.03.03 21:26 UTC
I was never a fan of David Cassidy. Always figured he was more for the ladies :D but I remember seeing him in "The Silver Dream Machine"

Sure you're not getting confused with David Essex. My god i do feel ancient now but i think my taste in music has definitely improved over the years.

Oop's! You're right of course Debs! Senile decay has set in  Or was it the malt?
- By Deborah mills [gb] Date 19.03.03 22:11 UTC
Malt sounds the better option. We don't like to think we're getting senile do we. Think i'm gonna need one myself soon am being attacked by mad husky whose jealous of the keyboard.

When my brother and I were in our early teens, mum and dad bought us our first record player - a Dansette I think it was called. I remember spending hours choosing my first record - I finally ended up with Adam Faith's 'What do you want?'. Happy days....

Veering off slightly - does anyone (John ?) remember who first recorded 'Singin' the Blues' ? I think it's played on a current TV ad and hubby & I have been racking our brains trying to remember the name of the artist. Any ideas ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.03.03 13:16 UTC
Hi Joyce,
Was it Eddy Cochrane?
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 18.03.03 13:30 UTC
Might have been him, Jean, there just seems so many possibles - Buddy Holly/Frank Ifield (hubby's bright suggestion !)/Billy Fury/Marty Wilde.......
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 18.03.03 14:00 UTC
Weeelll ..according to the Lyrics Search pages it was a number 1 hit for Marty Robbins and it stayed there for 10 weeks ;)

I thought it was Tommy Steele - my heart throb. My parents took me to the Coliseum in London where he was playing Buttons in Cinderella.
Lorna
- By John [gb] Date 18.03.03 22:20 UTC
It was Tommy Steel, Lorna. Eddy Cochran, Somethin else and Summertime Blues. Buddy Holly, Peggy Sue, That’ll be the day. (Days of the Ace Café on the North Circ, Busy Bee at Watford and the Cellar at Windsor!!!!!!(Mods and Rocker)) This is my past!

John

There aint no cure for the summertime blues!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.03.03 22:24 UTC
A mis-spent youth, eh, John? ;)
- By John [gb] Date 18.03.03 22:36 UTC
Sadly I'm afraid Jan. "Summertime Blues" has moved on to "The Winter Chill" these days! :(

But who cares! I'm growing old disgracefully!
- By John [gb] Date 19.03.03 18:03 UTC
Does anyone remember The Crazy World of Arthur Brown? "I Am The God Of Hell Fire" Used to come on stage with a pudding bowl full of flaming petrol on his head! Saw him on TV a year or so ago, he's a bit follicly challenged these days! LOL.

Or maybe you remember Barry Maguire? Who’s big hit "Eve of Destruction" was banned from the TV? Barry Maguire occasionally did backing for Mama Cass Elliot (Mama's and the Pappas) "California Dreaming"

John
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.03.03 18:55 UTC
Certainly remember "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown".....and to this day I can't decipher the lyric! The bit where he's talking/chanting. It drives me potty. :D

Didn't that come out about the same time as "Kite" by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound?
- By dudleyl [gb] Date 19.03.03 18:58 UTC
Oh dear John, we're obviously from the same era ( and what a good one it was too :))
My brother had Eve of Destruction - pretty poignant for tonight as well.
We had Johnsons Cafe which was about a mile past Brands Hatch. The Saltbox near Biggin Hill was another favourite. I used to walk around with bare feet because everyone thought I looked like Sandie Shaw.
Well, I was a bit slimmer back then!!!
;) ;) ;)

- By John [gb] Date 19.03.03 21:21 UTC
I remember Death Hill before the Swanley bypass was built. We were always at Brands Hatch in the days of Mike Hailwood, Derek Minter, Bill Ivy and co.

Can't say I remember "Kite" (Perhaps if you hum it to me?) Jan but Simon Dupree rings a bell.

Some wonderful groups around, Jan and Dean with the surfing sound "Little Deuce Coup". Lord Rockingham’s Eleven, Jo Brown, Little Richard playing the piano with his feet!

Arr. . . . memories!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.03.03 22:10 UTC
Humming frantically here, John, it goes "Mmmm mmm mmmm mm mmm mm mmmm"......the lyric goes something like "I will fly a yellow paper kite in your window, When the wind is high...", and there's a Japanese/Oriental girl murmuring a bit in the middle... :)
- By Deborah mills [gb] Date 19.03.03 22:14 UTC
Nice one! That's just prompted me to go rooting through the vinyls and have a bit of nostalgia. Love that song.

I threw all my vinyl out a few years ago. Even a limited edition recording of our Parish Church organ. (I have very strange tastes)
- By Deborah mills [gb] Date 19.03.03 22:39 UTC
Sacrilage ! we have extremely large collection of CD's and minidiscs but couldn't bear to part with vinyls. Our kids think we're crazy but we still catch them humming away when we play them. you're not the only one with strange tastes i'd listen to anything from Black Sabbath to Classical. Very into Neville Brothers at moment though.

The first record I bought with my own money was "no Parlez" by Paul Young, although I do have a vague memory of my parents presenting me with a dodgy record ....was it The Minipops??? Little kids dressed as popstars doing covers...truly awful! I think my first single was "Do They Know It's Christmas" - Band Aid. I still have loads of 80's records, and I've pinched alot of my parents golden oldies. I stole their original White Album by The Beatles complete with serial number.:) ssshhhh. I have some very very scarey heavy metal vinyl lurking in my cupboard from the 80's -early 90's. But my worst record is a novelty single, it has four tracks on and they all contain my name. I put it on once in blue moon and my friends kill themselves laughing.:D
Julie...very ashamed :D
- By liberty Date 20.03.03 00:55 UTC
You're ashamed?!!??

My first record was by ABBA!!!!!!!!!! my sister broke it ...........I wonder why?

Well that's any street cred I had gone!!! :)

My first was "My generation" by the Who, followed by the Kinks, "Lazy Afternoon". I would have bought the Beatles too, but didn't need to cos my sister bought them all! Nothing by the Rolling Stobnnes was allowed through the door, my parents hated them - no headphones in those days and a communal Dansette in the living room! Trouble was with only 5/- (anyone remember "bobs" ) a week pocket money I couldn't buy records that often.
- By rachaelparker [gb] Date 25.03.03 14:37 UTC
hhhmmmm Have heard of some of the songs you've mentioned but am afraid the first one I bought was I should be so lucky by Kylie Minogue.

Guess I'm showing my age as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By Snorri [us] Date 25.03.03 16:09 UTC
First record I bought was the LP "The Shadows' Greatest Hits"*, but, like John, I have memories of Bill Haley (in fact, I have "Rock around the Clock" on CD now!). I still have that "TSGH" LP, and "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" LP, but currently no phono deck to play them on!

That Arthur Brown LP has on it one of the finest-ever versions of "I put a spell on you"!

Now heavily into classical (over 800 CDs), but still time for nostalgia stuff, such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits and Genesis. Oh yes, and the Beatles and the Shads! :D

Snorri
Twilight Zone dinosaur
:D
* the LP cost 17/6 - 75p!
