But some of the questions are so hard! I mean.."Please give brief details of a major achievement for which you have been partly or wholly responsible, either inside or outside of work, or whilst in education. Please state when it took place and outline what you learnt from this experience".

What? I've been "outside the market" for nearly 20 years!

As for "referees from your last employment"...my last boss died in 1984! (No nothing to do with me!)
Ho hum :)

There must be some employers on here who can help you out with what sort of things they would be looking for.
I know a friend of mine came across this question and was equally as stumped as you for an answer. She ended up by putting down about raising her two children and a bit about them ..... and got the job! :)

That's worth a try, Lara! I mean, what have I got to lose?

(I can't be doing with this "selling myself", though. I was always told that talking about yourself was the height of bad manners, so it really goes against the grain.)

Hi Jeangenie

Probably too late in the day to reply to this post now, but speaking as someone who has to shortlist applicants the best advice I can give you is be as creative with the truth as necessary. Depending on the job all most employers want to know is ... can you manage projects with minimum supervision - doesn't matter if you're on £9k or £90k. I used to love filling in friends' application forms, as it's a work of art if done in the unscrupulous manner it deserves (ok, so I need to get out more...).

The best thing I ever read on an application form was:

(Applicant asked to summarise responsibilities in current position, for post of committee officer):

"I have been working as a yoghurt rotator for Tescos for the last three months".

Also:

"I thoroughly enjoy political discussions. My family and I all love to get round the table at dinner and talk politics".

Aghhhhh!

Good luck with the job

Jo
