Hi,
At what age does adolesence start, or does it vary from dog/breed.
Ours is just over 6 months and has started to be a right pain in the a@~e.
Wont do as he is told, runs around crazy, tries to hump everything in sight,he runs from one chair right across the living room to the other, almost falling of the back as he lands on it.
The only time he does behave is when he wants something, or it is feeding time.
How long does it last and do you just let it run its course. His chewing is also taking a turn for the worse as well, it looks like all his front teeth are through but still insist on chewing doors. Is this linked to his other behavior.
Thanks,
David.

Hi
He sounds just like my dog - only he's a Great Dane so you can imagine the damage when he launches himself on the sofa! It sounds like pretty typical behaviour.... but I would suggest upping the training and trying to occupy his mind a bit more. Willis doesn't need it as he is more of a "physical" type - so he gets a walk and then sleeps all day (bar a mad half hour), but I believe your breed is going to need more mental stimulation... that might help calm the physical side down and take his mind off all the things he shouldn't be doing :)

Hi David,
When did my son move in with you??!! :D
Seriously though, you seem to be the 'proud' owner of a teenage beagle! This stage will last a few months, so keep up with the training, and keep him busy - try to keep his mind active, and take him out with you as much as you can. He is going through a huge hormone surge, (which is higher than it will be when he is adult) and he just doesn't know how to deal with it.
As for the chewing, again this is normal at this stage. His front teeth will be through, but his molars may still be playing up. Try soaking rope toys and freezing them, and give him plenty of safe toys to chew - but not all at once or they become boring.
Try to stay calm, think happy thoughts, and you'll come through the other side! :)

My mal is going through this stage too... He hurls himself at the sofas, runs up and down the room at top speed and has developed a fetish for wallpeper, he has stripped halfway up my hall walls... He has also figured out that if he stands on his back legs, he can reach the kitchen worktops. I left him alone for 5 minutes last night and came back down the stairs to bedlam - 1 shredded newspaper, a jay cloth, 9 spoons, a salt cellar, all the cats dishes and a bag of crisps. I am now keeping a very close eye on him :)
I feel so sorry for him though, he has one canine tooth left and all his other teeth are just breaking, all at the same time. He is in so much pain (not stopping him from shredding though!) he is off his food and I am trying everything to soothe him. He is loving ice cubes and cold carrot at the moment, but any other ideas would be appreciated :)

Welcome to my world :D Taiko has those speedy moments tearing round the house bouncing off sofa's, slapping you with toys, woo woo-ing. He spends most of the day front paws flat, bum in air tail wagging. He thinks he's THE MAN on his walks, any bitch should be grateful for his attentions... He pees every other step, like he's leaving his calling card " hey ladies, I'm the man" :D We have decided that now is definitely the time to start occuping his mind more with more intensive training......unfortunately he thinks rather than training we need to learn to throw a ball...

I have news for you .....IT GETS WORSE
:D

Thats the good thing about Nuka... he hasn't figured out how to cock his leg yet, so he has one good wee at the beginning of a walk (standing like a horse would, with his head held up in pride :D) then he doesnt pee until hours later!
I forgot about the slapping with toys thing - he has a string of rubber sausages - they hurt like hell :D I am trying to teach him "down" at the moment, he has caught on really well, but because I taught him by pulling his legs slowly forward, so he lies down, he thinks that when I tell him "down" he has to stick his front legs straight out in front of him! He crashes to the floor every time and grins up looking really pleased with himself :D

Shhhh! At 20 months, Kai is actually starting to calm down and his "manic moments" are getting less - but don't tell him I told you :D And.... as of today, we have a 7 month old "cocker" (NOT the spaniel kind :) ) Does that mean I'm about to go through it all again? Aargh !!!
Joan :)
