I am picking up my new westie puppy in a couple of weeks and I am trying to get organised and reading book after book. The general rule seems to be not to let friendly puppy nipping turn into biting. I would appreciate anybodies advice on the best way to stop biting altogether so that I can start the way I mean to go on. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
PJB

wow a baby westie my westie is now five months old and he was my first ever pup.
the only way i could stop toddy biting is to stop the mouthing from day one.
i would say ow very loudly put him down and ignore him i repeated it and repeated it until he learnt which sometimes seemed repetitive but it works.
even now sometimes he tries to push his luck as now he is teething but i just start all over with the ow and ignore also as he is getting older and is house trained i put him in another room as you will find with your westie pup they are so clever they do try and push their luck.
its hard bleeding work with a pup but oh lordy its worth it toddy is funny cheeky and adorable especially when he sits there looking at you in adoration
good luck with your pup

Hi PJB,
First of all this is a hunting game that pups normally start to play with other pups to learn their hunting skills. Just do not play the game. Just get up and ignore your dog or give a sharp no and do something else for fun with a reward. If the pup only comes back harder try a taste deterant trick used by John Rogerson either bitter apple or smearing hot chillies onto your fingers. (be careful he does not get a taste for hot chilli human fingers though)
