OMG - how could the peke win??? Personally I prefered the Flatcoat and the Newfie and Beardie were very nice too. I think that the Peke looks like an overgrown hairy rat!!!!!!!

Susie

ps - no offense meant to Peke owners :-) I just prefer a dog to be a dog, I mean, how on earth could that derive from a Wolf!!!!!!
- By lel [gb] Date 09.03.03 21:23 UTC
I think the peke owners and breeders will probably be offended but i must admit i like a dog to look like a dog .

Not even sure that there was a dog inside all that fluff - might even had wheels under there :D

Greyhound or Flatcoat for me.

the poor little thing looked worn out after his walk about didnt he ?
How can you judge him best in show tho when the bodies and shapes etc of the other dogs could be clearly seen - allowing the judge to see that the breed standard was clearly met but how could he see on the peke ?
Lel
- By SaraW [gb] Date 09.03.03 21:35 UTC
touch Lel - that's why the judge goes hands on ;)
- By sam Date 09.03.03 21:56 UTC
lel...thats why the judges go over the dogs with their hands, feeling the construction beneath the coat, For goodness sake, you don't think they just stand back & guess do you?:(
You could say the same of the Newfoundland, the Beardie or the Kerry on that basis. Why pick on the peke?
As for saying the poor little thing looked worn out. Well i am not surprised. I took one of my working hounds yesterday....he is bang in the middle of the working season and at the peak of fitness....he was absolutely shattered after a day at Crufts. Far more than he would be after a day out hunting. So yes, the Peke & all the others probably were tired out..

Hi I agree it was definately the flat coat, newfoundland, bearded collie, or the greyhound for me. How can a peke with a quashed nose having to breathe consistently through its mouth be classified as best in show!!! Surely a dog must be able function normally ie breath properly through its nose to be judged as being best? I do not have a problem with the pekes size (not for me though, I like a dog to be a dog) or its heavy coat or its slow little walk if you like that type of dog but its inability to function normally is what I dislike in any dog. Sorry to offend peke breeders but until you can breed a peke or any other flat nosed dog that can breath normally all the time throught its nose and not permantly through its mouth then as far as I am concerned it is something that breeders should be striding for not for cups and rossettes at Crufts. Life has to be made better for flat nosed breeds not worsened year after year flatter and flatter noses and more and more discomfort and distress. Definately a thumbs down for me.

- By BL [gb] Date 09.03.03 22:21 UTC
I agree with you totally on that one
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.03.03 22:23 UTC
As the commentators explained to "Joe Public" the dogs are judged against their breed standards, not against "what I like". If the Peke was a better Peke than the greyhound was a greyhound, or the flatcoat was a flatcoat etc etc etc, then it had to be the best out of those seven.
- By lel [gb] Date 09.03.03 22:33 UTC
And thats why none of US are judging at crufts !!!!
:)

- By pat [gb] Date 09.03.03 22:49 UTC
Does the breed standard for a peke say that a peke must be bred with an extreme flat nose making it difficult to breath through its nose?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.03.03 22:56 UTC

I believe that by the time it gets to best in show at Crufts anyone could pick out what they liked and not go wrong as apparantly they are supposed to be the cream of all the dogs there (wether you agree withthat is another story) I agree that the little peke was ded beat and I certainly wouldnt have chosen him BUT!!! thats because I preffered another, overall I liked the Newfie and the kerry and the greyhound I half hoped the greyhound make spark some interest in people to take one of the thousands of rescued ones .
Anyway im glad it wasnt a lab in top spot :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 10.03.03 14:36 UTC
Agree, the Peke had had enough, and as it's meant to be 'on the day' he wouldn't have been my choice. Not a lover of Pekes myself, but have seen the same dog fair motoring (well, as much as is possible when you're that shape :D) around the ring at other shows.

By the same token, on Friday's performance I really fancied the Newfoundland for BIS, but he was all over the place moving on Sunday so blew his chances a bit there. Kerry is not my type of dog, but what a cracking showdog, fantastic performance - just a shame he was beaten. I'd have had the Beardie and the Kerry on Sunday's performances.

But then .......... what do I know?!?!

On another note, who was the Mal person who came to my bench to say hello on Friday, but unfortunately missed me by 10 minutes?

As much as I love greyhounds......oh dear.....that front? :(
- By mattie [gb] Date 10.03.03 21:35 UTC
Breed judge and group judge mustve got it wrong then Sam :)
- By sam Date 11.03.03 21:00 UTC
well, think what you like but I know abit about greyhound construction....& that wasn't ideal....you can see it even more on tv than I did on the night!
- By donnamwilliams1 [gb] Date 12.03.03 19:09 UTC
Everyone has their own preference in dogs, I own and breed Pekes and to me - they are the most wonderful dog on this earth...they are full of character and are very loyal and loving companions. My Pekes don't have breathing difficulties and don't sound bunged up....
On the other hand - i don't show my pekes - I wouldn't like to put them through all the stress and moving from one place to another but again - that's my preference. Each to their own I say - i thought some other breeds at crufts were also ugly and a greyhound always looks so under fed and fragile so I think the comments made here are a little uncalled for - every one of us has different oppinions and tastes - thank god - otherwise we'd all be after the same man / woman...
- By sam Date 12.03.03 21:08 UTC
heck, you obviously know nothing about greyhounds if you think that!!!!!! :(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.03.03 22:00 UTC
This is why there is no ideal dog for everyone. Whenever we get the question on the Forum I always say "one mans meat is another mans poison"

Of course my breed is the best!!!! :D :D :D
- By kate [gb] Date 10.03.03 12:03 UTC
I thought the flat coat should have won ,but i do love gundogs and i have never liked little fluffy toy dogs congratulations to all who showed though there were some spectacular dogs at crufts!
- By taffyparker [gb] Date 10.03.03 12:37 UTC
Well it's certainly not my favourite breed, but I couldn't help but be pleased for the little guy. The peke had already gone so far but didn't quite make it in previous years. The handler took no shortcuts to save the peke legs and I smiled to see that little bushy bum do his lap of honor. The newfi has had so much success recently, I'm sure it's day will come. All the dogs looked magnificent.
Now if there'd been a mal in the ring, you'd be right in thinking I'd be singing a different tune :D
Julie :)

Hey!! I LOVED that little man! I think Pekingese dogs are gorgeous, there are many dogs out there that don't look like what I would class as 'real dogs' in that they are completley man made, but this doesnt mean they are not lovely, many dogs have far more health problems too than an inability to breathe through the nose. I think that little guy is an absolute cracker and to see him bouncing around the ring like he was as big as a Newfie was just a joy - if I was to take a toy breed it would be a Peke anytime. Well done wee man!
- By gina [gb] Date 10.03.03 20:11 UTC
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE LITTLE PEKE. Had him down as the winner when I first saw him. I wouldnt own one as they are not a breed I would want but he was SO cute, fluffy and cuddly and he had got so near before and I am glad he won before he retired. I know nothing about pekes but I believe he must be am excellent example of his breed as he won.

Did like the bearded collie though as did husband.

Husband thought the peke looked like Kenny out of South Park :p

The Newfie, greyhound or the flat coat for me too. The peke looked like a big guinea pig. I too prefer a dog to look like a dog. Also I think there should be more than one judge, as surely if he bred small dogs he is likely to pick a small dog to win?? JMO.
- By Holly [gb] Date 10.03.03 19:16 UTC
I maybe wrong but I'm sure I heard the BBC commentator say on Sun that the Judge of the Toy group was a breeder of peke's just moments before she choose 'the little man' as the Group winner.
- By Bear [gb] Date 10.03.03 20:00 UTC
So when the Peke came second last year to a poodle was that because the judge was a poodle breeder? The wee guy might not be your cup of tea, but he was an excellent representation of the breed and for that, deserved to win, just as all the other dogs were perfect examples, any of them would have been worthy of winning, especially that Greyhound - my God the legs on that dog!
Is there not any Peke breeders on this board prepared to come to the rescue of the little Scottish mophead! I honestly think he's the cutest thing I have ever seen! Face like a monkey!!
- By Annieccho [gb] Date 10.03.03 20:11 UTC
I have to say - there is a big fuss about whether or not docking should be allowed. Lots of people saying it's cruel. I think it's much worse breeding the 'flat nosed' breeds which obviously can't breath properly. The poor peke couldn't breath without its mouth open.
- By metpol fan [gb] Date 10.03.03 20:16 UTC
Im afraid i wasnt a big fan of the peke, i have always thought this dog was pig ugly (sorry) but that is my feelings, i know he has won a lot of things as he is in dog world most weeks but i have seen much nicer looking dogs in this breed, i thought the flat coat or the newfie should have won it with the beardie not to far behind, by the way was the gsds german roachy type dogs that were being picked does anyone know.
- By Pam Ayling [gb] Date 10.03.03 21:54 UTC
I would have chosen the Kerry Blue to win if I'd been judging
& either the flatcoat or the greyhound as reserve.

Pam
- By Pam Ayling [gb] Date 10.03.03 21:57 UTC
I thought the Peke's owner normally carried him/Danny around on a freezer ice block - I have seen this at shows last summer.
- By janines [gb] Date 12.03.03 22:42 UTC
Hi yes your,e right the type that were being put up were the germanic type, from what I saw of the results anything with the slightest of English breeding in came at the back of the class, sooooooo pleased that I didn,t enter my Jordan

- By ace [gb] Date 11.03.03 01:29 UTC
The peke wouldn't have been my choice i personally was for either the greyhound poodle or the beardie, but give the peke his due he had just come from the group judging and bert didn't take any short cuts a lot of toy owners would have, as for the comment somewhere about the front of the grey hound the judge i know who gave it best of breed would definitely have not given it best of breed if it had a bad front. Also the comment about the toy group judge ,don'tknow about her having pekes but she has had poms
- By taffyparker [gb] Date 11.03.03 10:53 UTC
Deep breath.....here goes...as everyone is being so openly 'honest' about the poor peke...should I say it?...Dare I say it?...Okay...I'm so so so sorry BUT the newfi handlers belly just took far too much attention away from the dog........aaaahhh, there I've said it...again I'm sorry....dear Lord, the dog looked great standing but on the run all I focused on was the rise and fall of the handlers girth....now I'm guilt ridden and forgive me if he has medical conditions etc.....I'm putting my foot back in my mouth now.

As i am a Newfie person and i know the dog , he really is something else and i really wanted him to take it but his movement was very shakey as he was very full of himself.
I must admit the Flatcoat was glorious and so was the beadie.
But when i was watching the group judging for the Utility group i really liked the Chow Chow , i thought he was wonderful and prefered him to the Poodle.
But at the end of the day we all have our favourites and as the saying goes.
There is more judges outside the ring than in it.

As for the newfie owners belly, pales into the background as soon as the pekes owner opened his mouth, but Im not trying to offend anyone, just trying to put it politely. My other half rolled up laughing!

This reminded me a few years ago i agreed to go on a blind date, after lots of persuasion i might add.
Luckily i saw him before he saw me, or should i say saw his belly lol:D He never did get to meet his blind date:D

Hate to say it but the chap who handles the newf in the ring is a member of this board.
