We took in a stray English Springer Spaniel 2 years ago. The problem is we can't let him off lead. He gets so excited when he's off lead that his eyes glaze over and he runs in bigger and bigger circles until he eventually runs out of sight. We've managed to get him back on lead in the past, but now we don't dare. It spoils walks for us and the dog when he can't be allowed off. He's very good natured and it's a shame that he's missing out on so much exercise because he can't be trusted. Can anybody suggest a technique we can use. He's around 4 years old so he's got plenty of time to learn.

What is he fed on? Strange looks in the eye can be an indicator of a food intolerance.......

I think his eyes are only glazed because he's so excited. He's not usually like that.

Not in my experience of Springers - an excited springer will 'smile' - but the only dogs I've ever seen 'glazed' have had food intolerences...........

You could be right. His eyes do bulge a little bit and this would suggest a thyroid problem, which would explain why he's hyper. Having said that, the vet has never commented on it.
