Just a quick question - and no laughing if I sound stupid!

But could a mini schnauzer do agility or would he be too small??

We watched crufts at the weekend and he was going bonkers! Which brought
us to thinking- could he attend? maybe not to a competive level just
for fun once a week?

Just a thought. He does obedience training, but agility looks far more fun! :-)

They do mini-agility! Yes it exists - it's just that the jumps are smaller. :)

brill thanks, I will look into that!!

I am sure you are on here as often as me (oops every day!)

Very addictive don't you think? :-)

Hi Louise

I have just started agility with my lab and he loves it! In our beginners class we've got a sheltie and she jumps 6inches at the moment and the big dogs are jumping a foot! It is very addictive and I am making my own jumps so i can practice at home now!

Most clubs won't take dogs until they are 12 months old and they have done some basic obedience!

Have a look at http://www.agilitynet.com it is a very good site. They usually have a club listing on there but they had to unexpectly change hosts a few weeks ago and thats not back yet.

Hi
I do agility with my chinese cresteds and my partner does it with his beagle they both come into the mini category so have to jump 12 inch jumps after the initial training period. Mini agility is for under 15 inches over that they're midi and then it goes to maxi. Not sure what the height range is for midi but you should find the info on agilitynet as suggested.

Mini dogs are under 15" and jump 15" in competitions
Midi dogs are over 15" but under 17" and jump 20" in competitions
Standard dogs jump 30".

The are championship classes or standard & mini's so if a midi dog wants to become an ag ch then it has to jump in standard!

Hi, I've just been browsing through old messages and noticed yours. It interested me because we have a beagle who we've been doing agility with for just over a year. We've always entered her in midi because she is on the border of 15 - 15 1/2 " and we've been afraid of her being kicked out of mini for being too tall, although she is quite small for a beagle (with little legs).

How long have you been doing agility with yours? Do you enter any competitions? How difficult have you found training him, bearing in mind beagles are sooooo sniffy. Bonnie loves agility but we do have some problems with her following a scent mid-course. The best thing we've found is to keep her going and don't give her a chance to stop. She is also very clingy which means that we can't send her on, but have to run with her.
It would be interesting to hear from you and find out about your experiences - also with your chinese crested - can't say I've ever seen one of these dogs doing agility - you do pick unusual breeds! Don't you think it makes a refreshing change to see other dogs other than collies doing agility??

I have a scottie, who realy goes mad at agility. he will never will win, but gets rosettes for trying.
He has fun and gets good exercise, so do I.
Clubs will not let them start until 18 months though.

Hi Louise

That sounds like fun - I bet he'll love it!

The Schnauzer Club web site has some info about agility and also some pictures of the Mini S in actions in their photo gallery. (The web address is www.schnauzerclub.freeserve.co.uk)

Hope you and Rufus are well. We are now out and about on the lead this week :-)

Karen.

Huge thanks to everyone for replying – its definatley something I am going to look into a few months down the line!

Karen – hows the walking going? Bet Poppy loves it – all the sniffing ha ha. It really does open their eyes to a whole new world doesn’t it. Rufus has starting lifting his leg to wee now – very funny, especially when his leg gets tired and he puts it down half way through his wee

I do agility with Thistle, my lab, but there's a tiny dog in the class -a cross between a toy poddle and something- and she's brilliant, and loves it. I'd go for it if I were you.

I do agility with my boston terrier and he just loves it, we haven't entered in any compitions yet, but maybe some day. I would give it a try :)

Hi Louise,
Yes, mini schnauzers can do agility. There are quite a few mini schnauzers on the agility circuit, most of them aren't mega fast but recently there's been one that must be one of the fastest things around, still doesn't understand the meaning of contact points yet lol.
Both my 2 BC's do agility and obedience successfully but I find agility far more fun (they do to!)
