think that they are doing the world a favour by breeding their wonderful pet??? I don't really get involved in the dicussions on this site when a would be breeder asks how they should breed dogs. I would rather leave it to the people that know what they are talking about. But today I have had the issue handed to me on a plate by a friend of my neighbour. He has an 11 month old Rottie, who I will say is an extremely good example of the breed, but he does not have any KC papers!! He asked me how he would go about getting the dog hip scored and how much it would cost. I told him what I knew, as I had my GSD done last year, but, and correct me if I am wrong, I thought that because the dog was not registered the BVA would not score the X-rays. But this did not put him off, he will still have the dog x-rayed and health checked and will then start to use him as a stud :>( I asked him who he bought the dog from, but could not get much of an answer from him, but managed to find out that the woman that bred him has 5 bitches and 1 dog. She produces litters from all of these bitches every year!!! And to top it all off he paid £400 for the dog. £400 and no KC papers!!! It's no wonder that people want to breed their wonderful pet with no regard to whether they should or not!!!

You answered your own question with the last line of your post :
"And to top it all off he paid £400 for the dog. £400 and no KC papers"
and THAT is why they want to breed ...pound signs

Krys,
To his credit he is asking about hip scores. If it's a dog rather than a bitch he may find that he has a very hard time finding anyone willing to pay a stud fee.

In answer to your question. £££££££££
I however am one of the very few who do not see pound signs. I have a brown/tan entire male dobe, he is a brill example of the breed, I have been approached by a man to let my dog sire his bitch, I have said of course NO WAY. He knows he can sell these pups for at least £300. I've told him the best thing he can do is get her spayed:( I have explained all the usual health tests ect, so to persuade me he even offered half of all profits.
The point is i've done all i can to stop this man by not letting him use my dog. But unfortunately (six pups times £300, 50% = £900) £900 will be very convincing to someone else.
Someone else has quoted somewhere your either in it for the breed or the greed.

What people forget is the sale price of a puppy is not profit. Even if he cut corners with the rearing food alone will cost him a fair bit!!!

Hi B/Less
I have explained all the worst case scenarios Ie: lose bitch and all pups, emergency section ect, I gave him a very exagerrated(sp) breakdown of all costs and pointed out that he would not make much money. No matter what i've said he thinks he knows better.

No telling some people.
