Good Afternoon,

Could anyone recommend a reputable GSD breeder in the UK? Not looking for a puppy on the ground now but looking to acquire in 2026 depending on availability.

Ideally I would like to participate in obedience or protection work so will consider working lines however this is not essential.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Have a look at the breeders section here and then chat to them Make sure they understand what you are looking for and that their dogs have the necessary health tetsts.
Also going to dog shows can be useful . To find those look through fosse data website .Also ring one of the gsd clubs/ associations.
Protection work is very different to competitive obedience so be careful who you speak to and what they are suggesting. Working lines are often have a much higher drive and you need to consider if that's suitable for you situation. Most shepherds are going to good for obedience

Hi Furriefriends,

Thank you very much for your reply and for your advice.

I have been looking in the breeders section for a while now and reached out to a few to no avail as yet, but fingers crossed. Most seem to be hobbyists that only breed every 2-3 years.

I will certainly look through fosse as advised, thank you for that.

Breeding every 2or 3 years is not a bad thing . Good breeders will only be breeding to improve the breed and often when they want to keep a pup back for themselves to fit in with their breeding plans
Those are the serious good responsible people who are planning years ahead
You dont really want a pup from someone who is breeding all the time and often for money however its dressed up

Completely agree….. I would like to find a breeder that I can speak to over a period of time before any matings are carried out as I’m sure they will want to know a lot about my background and the sort of home I can provide for any pup and I wouldn’t expect any less.

Going by the one time I had a litter listed there, not at all.  I found myself listed alongside a known Puppy Farmer in my breed - never again!!  It was the one time I had a litter when the market was difficult.

I don't know whether the KC still supply details of litters of puppies, but the KC Approved Breeder scheme was scheduled to finish at the end of 2024.
