Hi I have a yorkie she's 4 years old she's had a litter of 4 pups there 3 weeks old now but I had to get her scanned because I thought she had a  pup left inside I was told it was a small piece of afterbirth which will work its way out,
She has been fine but today the weather is very hot in uk she started panting didn't want to eat much, while I was strocking her tummy bcz she loves her tummy stroked I noticed her teats on quite warm so yes I googled warm teats on whelping bitch (wish I never) its coming up mastitis she has not got any lumps bruising she has milk coming from most sone i cant get any milk out i dont want to squeeze to hard  yes she has little marks of pups nails. I want to know is it normal for her teats to be warm and to pant on and off I'm hoping it's just the weather...
I am ringing the vets soon as it's open just It's 4.50am I've been up all night just watching her she's ok soon as pups wake up she's in feeding them but she only stays like 5 mins then comes out pups or content they don't cry.
Thanks in advance and no I didn't plan these pups my girls had something called a split heat which I never knew could happen.

The panting is probably due to the heat although there are other causes, so it could be worth getting the vet to check her, and yes, it's normal for the teats to be warm. Your description of her behaviour sounds quite normal (she's not digging or shivering, because that would definitely be a cause for concern), but if she has scratches from the puppies' nails then you need to be clipping them more often - every few days at this age, so that they can't hurt her. It will soon be time to start weaning them (this doesn't mean you have to take mum away from her babies!) because this is the age when they're most demanding of food and it can be very draining for the mum. Good luck!

Two things - I believe you should have had her x-rayed re retained puppy/birth material as it's more reliable than scanning.  Secondly I also believe she could have done with a shot of oxytocin which should have cleared out anything retained in there.

I'd also go with panting = the hot weather but that it could be something else (as well?) so a vet trip would be a good idea.   Oh and yes, clip the pointy ends of the pups nails - I have always had to do that to prevent mum being scratched.

It's quite normal not to be able to express the bitches milk yourself, if the pups are quiet and content then they're getting enough milk. I wouldn't go to the emergency vet if your girl is otherwise ok, panting in this heat is normal. Maybe a check up on Monday if you're concerned? And yes, as JG and MB have said clip those nails, you can just use human nail clipper at this stage.
- By Mishelly1 [gb] Date 21.06.25 09:34 UTC
Yes soon as I noticed the tiny scratches I clipped there nails with baby clippers. I got concerned bcz soon as you search is it normal for teats to be warm? Mastitis comes up every time. I've got an appointment after 12 today with emergency vets, I worry to much but I've ordered royal canine mousse I've got lactol milk think I'll start weaning them jst a little once a day for next week then see how they go then up it to twice a day if all goes well thank you

Update... I went to vets there not sure what is wrong they said she's got little bit of temperature they "think" her uterus is little swollen but can't tell 100% with a scan but she's alert pups look fine, they put her on amox/clav antibiotics and meloxican pain relief plus a injection of it then told me I can't let pups feed from her ???? I'm in a right pickle I've used all my money to pay the vets and transport there and back and don't have any lactol milk untill Monday. I hope someone can give me some good advice.
I am picking up lactol and royal canine puppy mousse on Monday but what do I do untill then

you go on local facebook groups and beg for puppy milk.  someone local may have some. be aware people will likely not be kind about you breeding, swallow your pride and ask.

at same time you go round house and see anything you can sell to raise some cash for the vet bills and get that stuff up for sale on facebook asap,
unfortunately breeding is very expensive, sell anything you can to get the cash ready now. garden plants , garden furniture can sell well this time of year . jewellery can be sold at jewellers fairly easily if real .  vet bills can run up very quickly so figure out what you can sell and get it up for sale

Her uterus is a little swollen - she's just had a litter fgs.   And why scan and not x-ray?

You can use goats milk, warmed for the puppies as if they are approaching 4 weeks now, they should be able to take it.   Goats milk is close in make up to bitch milk.   GM is now available in supermarkets.

If I had a vet like this - well I wouldn't.   I'd have found another.

ps  'Tiny bits which will work itself out' ... did they give her a shot of oxytocin to clear out retained birthing material.   Have they confirmed she doesn't have a retained (dead) puppy?    I wish you luck but so far, not much of this makes sense.  Do you have a mentor because it sounds as if you need one IMO.

Yes I have goats milk. They only turned 3 weeks yesterday (sat) I was confused at the vets also she didn't know 100% what it is she said her uterus looked little red/swollen but then said scans can't really tell you if anything is left inside so how can she tell if she looked little red/swollen?? I did say how can you tell she didn't reply she just started to say well it can be the heat bcz she looks alert/lively enough then that's when she said she gave her a shot of meloxicam to follow on with separate her it looks like she doesn't have much milk I can't squeeze much out and to me she doesn't want to be with her pups.. I told her your joking I can't keep her away yes she sits with me but soon as they make a squeak she's in with them and no she doesn't do every 2/4 hours she goes in for 5 mins roughly every hour through night it's once and i have 2 pens a pen in living room and one in bedroom i change there bedding every few days i used white towels forst week so could see what mum was losing.  I do have 2 fans blowing around to keep room cool, the pups sleep eat and repeat I don't find any poop in pen mum cleans them all .
Only problem I have is she's worse eater ever yes she eats mince beef chicken eggs yogurt veg fruite but dry food even soaked she won't I've had frim most expensive to cheapest I do still give her it I have to soak it mush it then mix in what ever she's eating to hide it.
But we or back up my usual vets Tuesday to book in for spaden. Today I've refused to give her the meloxicam today I've gave her the antibiotics amox/cav. Thank you so much for your advice yes I clipped pups nails also

Hello again

I think your girl is doing fine and you are doing your best to ensure that mum and pups thrive. By all means keep your vet appointment but if mum seems well in herself and pups are thriving -at this age they will be increasingly independent although mum will still want to be in with them from time to time- try not to worry.

I don't breed now but remember what an anxious time it can be. One girl  refused food for three weeks after delivery of her puppies. I was run ragged finding delicacies for her  - dropping lumps of best salmon and steak into her spoiled mouth.  All eight pups did well and she was back to normal soon enough.

I know what that feels like my girls used to come home and say something smells nice, I would say it's for the dog now they say if they smell cooking is it the dogs ???? I've made lots different things for my girl both yorkies. I lost my girl 6 yrs ago to cancer age 10 so we got another girl around 18mth later don't know why bcz I know how fussy they can be. She's done brilliant today she stayed in with her baby's for over 10 mins I topped them up with R.C dry food soaked in goats milk mushed up to a paste my god they demolished it so I'm thinking on feeding them once a day until there 4 weeks then start twice a day next wknd. Thank you so much

No need to rush into this; she can't be spayed for about 12 weeks.
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 23.06.25 07:07 UTC Upvotes 3
I totally agree (don't rush into spaying) - in fact I'd let her have one season before getting her spayed (provided you can keep her separated!!) to give her body a chance to settle down after having this litter.

And again with the greatest respect, I'd be using a different vet!!!

Agree entirely Mamabas - re. vet and spaying etc

Seems all is well with your girl and pups. You have had great advice from this forum. I hope you feel reassured and able to come back with more questions.

This was an emergency. I truly think they thought I was a back yard breeder the state of me tracksuit bottoms tshirts just out the washer mind i was clean lol but believe me I didn't care what I looked like I was up all night the heat was killing me I didn't eat a thing with worry I just wanted to make sure my girls was fine I love the pups to bits but she's my baby.
I'm 100% getting her spade but I think I'm going to get my boy clipped first then let her recover then get her done maybe in few months like MamaBas advised.
I am the softest person when it comes to animal honestly I would starve to feed and make sure my pets get what they need first I've took in 2 dogs that got tossed from pillar to post just so I knew they got more love and attention thanks everyone for all your help with no judgment

you have done your best and thats all anyone can do.
I think you are very sensible delaying your little bitches spay until she is well over the litter but do be aware castrated males are not immediately infertile so be careful . your vet should be able to advise when he will be fully unfertile.
style of dress, it is to your credit that your focus was on your dogs welfare not your clothing. if vet is sniffy thats their problem not yours.

Thank you for that I didn't know he could still impregnate after the snip thanks for that.
Pups and mum seem to be doing ok gaining around 10/15gram a day and I only feed them once a day with r.c puppy food soaked in goats milk ill up it to twice a day next week I think when there 4 weeks old. Having pups is worring I take my hat off to full time loving breeders the hardest part for me is going to be when these baby's need a new loving family I'm not letting them go to just anyone one thing about me I'm straight forward so if I think the person isn't right I'll say no thanks again everyone. Wish I could upload a pic of them to show yous how much there loved and looked after ????????

>I didn't know he could still impregnate after the snip thanks for that.

Studies have shown that males can be fertile for up to 6 weeks after castration so it's definitely something to be aware of!

>I only feed them once a day with r.c puppy food soaked in goats milk ill up it to twice a day next week I think when there 4 weeks old.

By the time they're 5 weeks old it's best practice to be feeding them 4 or even 5 small meals a day; their tummies are tiny so can't hold a lot of food at once but they're growing fast and need lots!
I doubt if your vets were bothered about what you were wearing; scruffiness we don't mind as long as the clothes aren't smelly! We have to get the air fresheners out after some clients have been in. Farriers leave a strong smell of burning hoof behind them!

Yes placing them in right homes is going to be tricky.  there are good homes out there but weeding out unsuitable never fun.
do not offer them free.  free attracts the wrong kind of person. nor should they be very cheap for same reason. have a good look on sites what other similar pups are being sold for.  bargain hunters are not what you want for pups.

my knowledge of placing puppies is pretty useless but I know my last dogs breeder looked up address on google to see if looked suitable home .
experienced breeders on here should be able to give some pointers on how to better the chances of getting best homes.

some of the cash charged for them could be kept back as a bribe on new owners, I have heard of folk giving a couple of hundred back to new owners if the pup completes bronze training course or when they get neutered, obviously with receipts required to get that bonus and time limit to achieve these.   encouraging neutering and training sets those pups up for a better life.  that could go in the puppy contract you and new owners sign.
