Topic Dog Boards / General / Liver scan
- By furriefriends Date 27.04.25 17:41 UTC Upvotes 1
On testing brookes urine due to diabetes insipidus vet found casts showing. New one on me bit she then did a full blood panel. Casts are insignificant but liver enzymes are far to high.
Next step on Tuesday is a liver scan .hoping it's nothing sinister and at least can be managed with meds amd or supplements.  She is 14 so it could be an aging liver.
Fingers crossed please that we don't have a tumour or something nasty

Now being tested for cushings. Resilts tomorrow ontop of diabetes insipisus
- By Lacy Date 29.04.25 18:07 UTC Upvotes 1
Was she not tested for Cushings before the diagnosis of D.I.
When Oscar was first diagnosed I was stunned & at later appointments took notes as many of the terms just went over my head (easily done!), in fact when it was first mentioned as dilute urine sat there thinking 'well he's well hydrated!'. Good luck.

Not as far as i know.from what i have been reading i am surprised tbh as it seems cushings can be the underlying condition.  Unless of course I have forgotten

I hope you had good results from the tests and all will be well for Brooke. Also your daughter’s cat.
- By furriefriends Date 04.05.25 07:15 UTC Upvotes 1
Seems she needs more tests . I am speaking to the vet as it was only a message due to missing each other.need to know what that involves
.
My daughters cat is very poorly but stable and being closely monitored at home. We are in close contact with the cardiac vet who is lovely and is thinks  treatment is still worthwhile as now the fluid has been drained gis quality of life is still good but she may have to think very carefully in the future.  Juggling heart and kidneys is not easy

Best wishes for both Booke and your daughter’s cat. Late life care is full of worries.
- By furriefriends Date 04.05.25 18:50 UTC
It certainly is merry paws. Thank you

Look at her meds and supplements, if she's on any - my old girl had high liver enzymes due to echinacea that she was on for her arthritis.  Took her off it and they dropped down to normal.
- By furriefriends Date 06.05.25 08:59 UTC
Thank you nikita. I will think about that . Atm its librela , and dessmopressin for the diabetes insipidus.  After lacy commented that Oscar was tested for both i am wondering if dessmopressin has any connection.also need to look more into librela u know some have had problems
- By furriefriends Date 06.05.25 09:07 UTC Edited 06.05.25 09:14 UTC
Well well what do u know. Dessmopressin can cause raised liver enzymes. Its rare but this dog specialisesin rare and unusual . According my quick reading liver bloods should be checked regularly.  I shall be suggesting that to vet . Librela it gas been seen but even more rarely .
I think a discussion is needed with the vet.
Thank you nikita

Update.  Borderline for cushings . Vet agreed about desmopressin and raised enzymes. Before doing further tests she is discussing with specialist at referral vet. Further tests may involve low does steroids . I don't understand that yet so await the next phine call

I don't really know for sure, but fwiw, Teazel was given Librela shortly before she went off all her legs and we had no option but to give her peace.   She had, as faras I'm concerned, typical for Degenerative Myelopathy but Richard never confirmed this - and he wasn't on duty on the afternoon we had to let her go.   On that basis, I'd be wary about having another of mine given Librela.

I have to say that when I was next in the surgery and Richard was on duty, in passing (he was seeing another patient) he said he'd not realised we'd lost Teazel and he did seem a bit 'sheepish'.  She'd only had the one shot.

Interesting point mamabas . In our case goodness knows how u would find out what is causing what. She has a tumour on the spine inoperable, which was expected to cause rear end weakness. She has arthritis / spondylitis and now diabetes insipisus/ cushings. As for what started when would be hard to know .she is also elderly.
- By furriefriends Date 15.05.25 08:47 UTC
Question.  I have to go out tomorrow for a few hours. Now she is off her dessmopressin until Tuesday she is drink loads again and is incontinent.
I will be able to sort out her walk and someone seeing her every hour or two . We are talking leaving at 11am back by 6pm
Would it be reasonable to accept she may be incontinent during that time ? She doesn't seem distressed when she wrrs indoors. I have noone who can take her for the day and manage
- By weimed [gb] Date 15.05.25 13:26 UTC Upvotes 1
you have no choice. as long as she isn't distressed by it and you don't mind mopping up I wouldn't worry
- By furriefriends Date 15.05.25 21:38 UTC Upvotes 1
Mopping up is no problem or using my carpet cleaner . It's her i worry about.  Thank you
- By Lacy Date 16.05.25 09:03 UTC Upvotes 1
Good luck, Oh the mopping up, the cream carpets in hindsight weren't a good choice!
Just ensure she has water.
- By furriefriends Date 17.05.25 22:59 UTC Upvotes 1
Plenty of water available 24/ 7 . Plenty of mopping going on
Poor girl is incontinent in her sleep . Wednesday when she can have meds again cant come fast enough
- By Lacy Date 18.05.25 08:31 UTC
Has she be taken off desmo for further testing? Poor girl.
- By furriefriends Date 18.05.25 13:22 UTC Upvotes 1
Unfortunately yes for a week . It's awful she us so thirsty never mind constantly weeing.  Apparently cushung tests have 2 parts and this the second.  I am hoping they can immediately put her back on something so we can go back to normal.
- By furriefriends Date 23.05.25 17:03 UTC Upvotes 2
It looks like we are in the clear for cushings but vet is discussing with the referral vet as its such an unusual condition
Thought u might all like an update
- By Merrypaws [gb] Date 24.05.25 06:42 UTC
Thank you for the update. I hope you get a good answer soon.

If it’s any help, when a previous dog had old-age continence problems, when I had to go out (or at night) I used to confine him to a biggish area (e.g. kitchen and hall), with the floor covered with opened out bin bags topped with old newspapers and with puppy pads (lots, cheapest I could find) on top of the papers so that when I came home I was able to remove and dispose of any soiled pads (and papers if the pads had been scuffed aside). The rest of the covering was easy to pick up and put aside for next time (certainly easier than mopping puddles, and paw prints if he’d walked through his puddle!).

When I was at home, he still asked to go into the garden to relieve himself at need, so the use of puppy pads had not broken his house-training.

FF. It'll probably take her a few days to settle back on desmo.
Oscar's vet sadly left after nursing us through the last three years we've been so fortunate she's been amazing, but then had to think about finding some who would take him on with an interest in DI. Thankfully a couple of independents have opened here since COVID & one especially is getting great reviews, spoke to the receptionist on Thursday & surprised when the senior partner phoned back yesterday & after discussing Oscar for over half and hour is willing to take him on. Made my day!
Good luck.

That is good news
I have been lucky once on the desi she has been fine
I do need to get a urine sample tested to check all is well now
Feels like going back to the beginning as that's where the worry started
Tbh apart from checking her urine it's all been plain sailing
Sounds like its been a bit more tricky for Oscar
Fortunately although a rare condition the owner of the surgery is knowledgeable about it. Yep we are still independent thank goodness

Thank you merry paws . The complications was that the week she was off the meds we were having amtico flooring throughout the ground floor
The fitter was not amused at wet floors when he arrived each morning .especially as he isn't an animal person

I finally shut her upstairs , we have a stairgate and she only had our bedroom overnight. Lots of work for.the vax though
Thank goodness we aeemnto be backnto normal and no cushings
