Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Akita lunging for feet

Looking for advise from general dog owners, not only Akita owners. My 13month old male Akita (Rannoch) has one worrying problem - some peoples feet! He has the usual attempts at exerting his authority over me, which I expected and deal with when they arise, and in general he is a well balanced young dog, happy with people and children when we are around, a bit wary when we are not, but not aggressive. However, there are times when he acts strangely to some people, I have noticed it with 2 adults before and a couple of children, but he has just done it to a 3rd adult thats why I'm posting this. For no apparent reason, he lies down, and makes sudden lunges at the feet when the person is stepping close by him, but he doesn't snarl, he gives a sort of frightened yelp and bite then runs. To adults this is annoying, but to the children it is obviously going to be frightening. We have only seen him do this twice to kids in his 13 months, punished him immediately, and the rest of the time he is ok. I think he may have been stepped on by a child when he was very young, about 3 months, and one of the adults he did this to was a neighbour who did not like him and made it clear, and I can't be certain this man never aimed a kick, or stepped on him too. However, many dogs get under their owners feet and get stamped on accidently I'm sure, and it doesn't lead to problems. Any ideas?
