Some of you may remember my Flat coat Brooke. Today she is 14 years old. She has put us through all sorts  , a tumour on the spine when she was given 6 months but here she is 5 years on. Removal of spleen after an haemangioma bled, diabetes insipidus and constant treatment for allergies .Somewhat weak in the rear and on librela but she is still her loving bouncy self. No one told her she is a veteran you see
We love her dearly

Congratulations to her, and to her loving owners!!

Can I just caution you re Librela.  Teazel was on this for her degenerative myelopathy (although her vet hadn't agreed with me that she had this, at the time) but since we lost her, I have read a few disturbing articles on Librela which have led me to believe using this didn't help her and may have actually hastened her total loss of the use of all her legs, not just the back legs.  She showed no positive response to having this.   Her vet, who wasn't there when we had to give her peace, when he saw me days after, said how sorry he was at our loss.  I felt he was somewhat sheepish.

Happy Birthday to Brooke, she is amazing FF, I hope she keeps you on your toes for a while yet

Mamabas I'm surprised Teazel was given Librela for DM, Librela is a pain reliever for arthritis, degenerative mylopathy is not painful for dogs so I can't see what they were hoping it would do for her?

Thank-you both.
We have been using librela almost since it came out and also solensia for one of our cats. I know someone have had problems but it's certainly helped ours. Unfortunately they're are risks with all drugs and I feel your have to consider all sides after some research
I too am surprised it was used for dm but have to thinknthe vet had some idea in mind
As an aside I wasn't aware it was an issue for whippets. Hopefully as breeders in gsd are doing there are tests before breeding so theoretically it can be bred out of a breed. I am sorry u lost teazel

I think most breeds can have DM, my last borzoi did, but as it's a disease of old age it's not a priority for most people to breed out. Most borzois don't live long enough for it to be a problem. Silken Windhounds are actually the only breed that can say for sure that they will never get DM, when the dna test became available they tested the oldest silkens from every founder line and we simply don't have it.

Happy birthday to Brooke; a great age for any dog but particularly splendid for a Flatcoat! She is clearly very dearly loved and superbly cared for. At work so many owners report that their dogs have been given a new lease of life after starting Librela ("He's his old self again") with only a few noticing no real improvement so they stop it.

As said, my vet wasn't with me re DM which is why, I think, he used Librela and for sure, it didn't help Teazel at all re pain relief.  And she wasn't IN pain!!  She just lost the use of her legs, back first and then finally, the front too.   It was sad to see her like that.

Great to see that Whippet take BIS Crufts!!

It really is Jeangenie
I spoke to her breeder yesterday a d she still has one of the 2 siblings she kept to show and work.  Doesn't know how all 12 in the litter are doing but those she does know about lived to around 12 which is above average

As cancer is a big problem in the breed one day they may beable to find ways of reducing the incidence
Work is being done but who knows whe.

Just to add the dear girl is now deaf
Hard to tell if she has any hearing as sometimes she seems to hear me especially around food !!! What a surprise
So no off lead time unless in safe fields.  I know she would find something to go off after
