Hello all,

I live on an island in the UK and so there are limited breeders where I live. So I've joined Champdogs to find myself a pup companion who, with the help of a local charity I'm hoping we can train to become my assistance dog.

I have been advised that a Labrador would be ideal for me, and because of my temperament great for the Lab as well. Due to limited ability to travel I'm concentrating my breeder searches within a 20 mile radius of Southampton, Portsmouth or Lymington.

I care very much for all living things, and a new pup will be no exception. It will be a working dog, but will also receive all the kindness, care and love that he or she deserves.

Thanks.

Welcome. If u go to the breeders section and select.filters you can put in your postcode and the distance u wish to travel to highlight breeders in the right area

I just had a peek at what litters are advertised on the Puppy section here and there are 3, none of which would be within 20 miles (IOW?) of where you are.  One says N.Devon, another Looe, Cornwall and a third in Cullumpton, Devon.   Sometimes people with litters from working lines advertise in a local newspaper.

You might be more successful if you go via the relevant Breed Club most of which have somebody keeping a record of members with puppies available, at least that used to happen.    The KC has lists of litters although using them is no guarantee of the quality of the litter - just that the breeder has paid the listing fee!   Only once did I have my name added to their list but found myself alongside a well known puppy farmer!  I never did that again.

Thanks MamaBas,

Yes I am on the IOW. I've since added a puppy waiting list entry and set that within a 50 mile radius. There are a few matches there. I am looking to reserve, that sounds clinical, a pup from a new born litter so we can pick it up and I can start bonding with it as soon as it's ready to leave it's mum, 8-9 weeks.

Thanks for the advice of going via the relevant breed club. I am wary of the KC so haven't gone searching there. Great tips! :)
