Hi my daughter has had a litter of pups she's been rushed to vets 48 hours after birth with shaking tremors vets said she is fine then sent her home before she left vets mum took a fit so rushed back in they said she has boarderline hypoglycaemia they didn't give her anything nor did they give her advice on what to give her if it happens again, there was one nurse that wanted to keep her in overnight but a vet above her said no send her home me and my daughter or at our wits ends, mum is well looked after she's on science plan puppy food she adds chicken breast minced beef sometime instead with vegetables carrots turnip sweet potato please if there's anything we can do to help prevent this happening again any help will be appreciated. I have read it can be low blood sugar she was in a long labour 15 hours from first pup to second then another 10 hours before she had other 2 pups even then the vets video called and said its normal so I'm thinking is it through low blood sugar bcz of being in labour for so long we did give her glucose mixed in yogurt a few times during birth but was it enough

She needs calcium urgently; Collo-cal D is ideal, but calcium tablets (over the counter from P@H or other pet stores will be better than nothing. Some puppy milk to drink should be enough till you can get some proper calcium later today. Without this she could easily deteriorate quickly and start seizuring further. I'm shocked that the vet didn't give her anything; this form of eclampsia can be life-threatening.

Just out of interest, was she given calcium supplements when she was pregnant?

I hope things have settled down but fwiw, I never left a bitch for much over one hour without seeing a puppy delivered, each delivery.   If this was going on, I'd have thought a C.Section would have been far better than to leave her that long between deliveries.   And yes, calcium tablets for sure.   Plus we didn't feed puppy food pre-whelping.  Or after for that matter.  Puppy food is for PUPPIES in my book.  Provided mum is on a good quality normal food, she should be fine.  Now you know how many puppies she has to cater for, then you need to up the food, and perhaps supplement the litter.  This is not a good situation.

Hang on, isn't hypoglycaemia to do with blood sugars?  So is calcium treatment relevant?

As for keeping her in overnight - what about the nursing puppies?

Must say that this sounds more like hypocalcaemia to me too. I hope they got some calcium into her just in case the vet forgot to mention it. I always used to offer my girls glucose and warmed milk when they had finished whelping, and we were never without ColloCal D. I hope we hear that this tired girl is OK.
