Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Golden Retriever puppy
- By ADY2810 [gb] Date 08.08.24 11:02 UTC
Hi
I am looking for a Golden Retriever (dog) puppy towards the end of the year.
I have previously owned 2 goldies, 1 lost to old age and 1 lost to bone cancer aged 9.
Distance is no problem.
Any breeders out there planning litters please.
Thanks
Ady2810

Have a look on the breeder section here where pups will be listed . Then have a chat with a few breed breeders

https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/golden-retriever/puppies

Looking at the list it seems there are few with boy puppies .
Great that ubare happy to travel formthe right dog. Make yourself familiar with the health tests that are expected to have been done in the parents so you are armed with information to find what u are looking for.

I had a quick look there just out of interest and I see that one of the litters advertised the sire has an elbow score of 2! I didn't think you should breed from 2s?

You shouldn’t. So I’d avoid that breeder straight off.

Wow, he's sired 50, five zero, litters!!!!

Omg that's ridiculous.  Some breeder !!! I hope the op sees your comments and does find out about health tests for the breed

I hope so, the litter is advertised as 'show quality' but googling both parents produces not one show result. You really do have to be careful no matter where you see a litter advertised. The litter listed under that one looks great, everything you'd want to see, so it's definitely a case of buyer beware isn't it.

Unfortunately as discussed before champdogs is by no means a failsafe way of finding out about pups or breeders or a short cut to doing your own research on buying a pup
I belive the health tests arnt checked before advertising  . Apologies if I am wrong but its still very much caveat emptor

Sorry think I have really repeated what you have said chaumsung

 well we can't say 'be careful, do your homework' enough

Yes you are wrong regarding checking health tests. All litters on Champdogs are checked to ensure that they adhere to our breed specific requirements :

https://www.champdogs.co.uk/req/golden-retriever

However I agree the onus is on the puppy purchaser to perform their due diligence before choosing a breeder. We have a puppy buyers guide which gives some guidelines about what to look for :

If true, that's good BUT can I ask how this is done?   People can put anything on adverts after all - and all too often do.

I am pleased to have that clarified and i assuming that by breed specic requirements mark means the expected health tests.  but you are quite right mamabas . Unless the paperwork is seen anything can be said . Maybe it has to be shown to admin before advertising ?
I wpuld still suggest that a prospective buyer finds out what is good and what is bad for results  The example chamsung gave of elbows on one advert confirms that although the tests were done the breeding was ill advised

That is correct. When I advertised my litters here I had to send evidence of any tests (such as BAER) that weren't already on the KC site.

How can I be sure a dog has been health tested?

"All health tests listed on Champdogs under the "Verified Health Tests" heading have either been verified from a trusted source, such as the Kennel Club, or we have seen a copy of the test certificate.

If a breeder has mentioned a health test within the text on their page and the test result does not appear in the "Verified Health Tests" section then we can not guarantee the authenticity of that particular health test result.

Breeders should be happy to show you copies of all of their dog's health test certificates.

If a dog is listed as fully health tested then we have verified that the dog has had all the Champdogs mandatory and recommended health tests for their breed."

I would just like to say how important it is to check all test scheme results prior to going to visit litters.

I certainly appreciate all the work the team on here do, but some breeders only have an initial eye test done not annually as recommended by the KC, why they don't test annually who knows but it's certainly a no no if I were looking for a puppy.

Don't forget, you can also verify results on the KC website
