Can anyone help pse - I have a bull terrier bitch in day 5 of her season. We are presently looking for a suitable good quality stud dog, but cant remember what days were the optimum ones for a successful mating.

She did have a litter last February - but unfortunately I cant remember what days I took her to the stud dog. We only managed one successful mating as the stud dog wasnt interested when we took her down 2 days later so I guess we hit the nail on the head then.

Ovulation testing - is this carried out by the vet ?
Is it necessary for a successful mating as we didnt use this last time and our bitch was in whelp after one mating. Unfortunately, not having the best of memories I cant remember where in the season this occurred.
Any help would be appreciated ?

I think most reputable stud dog owners would like a little more notice than this, to study her pedigree, check her BAER certificate (hereditary deafness is on the increase with Bull Terriers) and that she has been heart-tested.

If these are already done, you could contact one of the BT advisors listed in some of the monthly dog magazines - if not, get her tested and p.d.q. and start making enquiries for next season.

Contact the breed club for lists of reputable stud dog owners and advice. As mentioned in previous post, noone who allows their dog to be used on an untested bitch is reputable!
