please help, i have a 12 week old cairn terrier, who has blood in his poo.
phoned the vet and they have said it could be a reaction to his vaccination, which he got on friday, i have given him a bland diet for a day which seemed to help him, but have noticed the blood is back again, could it be he has eaten something he shouldn,t, am taking him to the vet for tests, but am really worried.
he seems happy and healthy enough.
just need re assurance.

I had exactly the same panic a few weeks ago. Initailly the blood was a jelly slimey like substance, disappeared for a day then I noticed there was abit of blood in Taiko's stool. The vet said staright away that slimey/jelly blood is from the large intestine and is an allergic reaction. He said if it were an illness or poison the pup would probably have other symptoms...other than a trace of blood Taiko was fine. The vet gave Taiko a weeks course of antibiotics and he wasn't allowed to eat for 24 hours. The vet thought the blood that appeared after being blood free for a day was probably just residual traces coming out. Sure enough Taiko was fit and well in no time.
Taking him back to the vet is definitely the right move, but I'm sure your hunch is right and he's eaten something he shouldn't.
Give him a hug from me :)
Julie :)
