I currently have two indoor cats after a lifetime of cats that are indoor outdoor which could be part of.the problem
Anyone with cats what type of covering do u have on your stairs ? My two have decided inspite of scratching posts both vertical amd horizontal that the stair are the place to scratch and have made holes in the carpet.
I had intended to renew the carpets anyway but really don't want to put down new carpet only for them to ruin .them.  any suggestions please ?

My daughter insists on having a stair gate up.  This stops one cat (the one who is rather partial to scratching carpets) from going upstairs.  The other cat isn't a problem, which is just as well since he easily jumps the gate.  We have cat "furniture" in my living room and the kitchen which seems to be sufficient for them.  Wool carpet is the worst thing to get.  Will catnip help if put on the scatching posts?  Again, my one who occasionally scratches carpet, is obsessed with catnip.  If I pick a few sprigs of the plant and rub it over the cat scratcher he is very attracted to it.  Could be worth a try.

Thanks honey. We have catnip and they occasionally enjoy it.
Current carpet is sn 80/20 so next time I sm going for manmade as you sre not the first to mention wool being attractive. Unfortunately both are jumpers snd although we have a stairsgate across the hall they can both go over it if they wish . Even though it's an extra tall one
