Topic Dog Boards / Health / Collie Latest Blood Test
- By lkj [gb] Date 19.05.23 05:31 UTC
Our collie had her 6 monthly blood test and it appears she has cancer.  Vet thinks at the moment it is blood cancer. The vet explained that all organs are fine.  It was explained to us all the results.  Only spoke on the phone and tried to jot down all that was said. She has had thyroid problems since she was 1 year old.  She also has a skin problem and has been on apoquel since a year old.
We are posting on here to ask what should we ask.  Also what should we do if things are looking too bad.  We feel guilty that she is not insured and further treatment could be too expensive for us. Protein result not good and was advised to increase her food intake.  We have got to go back in 4 weeks to have her checked again.

Forgot to say she is behaving in exact the same way.  Eating, drinking, walking and sleeping. We have another dog an Alsatian still playing together.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. what a worry for you. I like to try and be more like our beloved dogs, live in the moment and not worry about the what-ifs. If she's happy just now, eating, playing with your other dog and you don't see any difference in her then why get lots more tests done. Just enjoy your time with her. My vets now say all dogs should be checked every 6 months, including blood tests, I don't do it. I'll take them to the vets if I notice a problem, if I don't notice it then it's not a problem. Just my opinion.

Thank you for your positive reply. Blood test every 6 months for thyroid.  Extra blood test done because she had lost weight.   We should not have agreed. Thank you again.

Thank goodness mine havnt suggested that. I took brooke to see vet on Monday with a couple of things that were niggling me and very happy with what we have decided to .
Librela for arthritis although hard to say exactly what us guving muscle loos and stiffness as she also has tumour on her spine altbough now painfree as far as we can tell  she also an intermittent cough. First treatment conservative a week on synulox before we decide to look further
Not kc I am pleased to say . No bloods suggested although at 12.5 she is hardly a pup
Surely 6 monthly bloods would stress sone dogs out more than u gain ? I will stick to chamsungs theory .

Dogs live in the moment. just keep her happy.  regarding treatment /insurance I am not a fan of extensive treatment when an animal has multiple things going wrong. just because something can be done does not mean it should be done.  for example our first weimaraner had mouth cancer- the vets wanted to cut off nearly all of her lower jaw and do radiotherapy.  I felt it was cruel to subject an animal to that and we just spoiled her rotten and she had pain meds.  as it turned out she had another 2 very happy years -and was able to play her favourite game of fetch as still had her jaw.

Our forst fcr had a tumour on the jaw which from forst spotting it to op was least than a week and by then it was massive. We did the u describe and totally agree I would never have it done to any other dog but we reacted to what the vets said they could do looking back probably in sone sort of shock and not really weighing up what we agreed to .
It was awful and would never do again . Even more sadly she died a week later of bloat maybe partly from stress. But imo it was a big mistake
I very much subscribe to just because u  an doesn't mean u should

furriefriends I am very sorry to hear about your dog.  it isn't easy though when the vets are telling you this is what you should do.  I got a very annoyed attitude off the vets when we refused to do the opp- they seemed to think it was about her appearance was why we were refusing.  Couldn't seem to get through to them I did not care what she looked like, I just wanted her happy and comfortable and if that cut her life short that was better then being not happy
