In October last year the vet thought my dog had a palpable enlarged spleen, bloods were and they were all fine. Nothing else done or suggested.
yesterday he a check up prior to boosters and she thought the spleen was still enlarged, felt balloon like instead of being long and thin. She has suggested that we do an u/s scan to check it out. she also went through the possible cases and what could happen if not checked.
my dog is 10 and he is no different now to what he was in October, no vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, not off his food. The only thing I would say is that he acts older for his years, sometimes will just plod next to us on walk but he has been like this since last year. He is on thyroxine as blood last autumn did show he was hypothyroid.
Would/could he be completely asymptomatic for this length of time if he had an enlarged spleen?
thank you

I can't help you re an enlarged spleen but when one of our hounds suffered with GDV (bloat with torsion) he managed to have ruptured his spleen which, once opened up, had to be removed. He was 8 at the time and despite losing his spleen, he had no medication to counter that (and no further GDV) and lived into his 14th year until what was thought to be a stroke claimed him.
If your dog has to lose his spleen, he should be fine if mine is anything to go by.
thank you
yes vet said he'll be fine without spleen so if that was advised I'm not worried, its was if he could have enlarged spleen for such a long time (ish) and not have any other signs. if it was a tumour I'm sure we would have seen something obvious by now.

I had an Irish Setter who was absolutely fine, then started not being quite so keen to go out for a walk and then began to be more picky over his food. This was over a period of two weeks. Took him to the vets who could feel a lump in the spleen area so operated. He has cancer of the spleen which had spread to the liver. There was nothing to be done and he was pts. He was only 7.
There had been no other symptoms prior to the two weeks of him being a ‘bit off’. It taught me that dogs can be seriously ill yet you would hardly know
Thank you
I can only guess if it were cancer i would know by now since October 22.
I will get him scanned to check things.

One of mine is being monitored for a lump in hers. My vet said the problem with splenic tumours is that they can just be there for a long time, growing without symptoms, until they rupture and then it's emergency surgery and a life and death situation. So if his spleen is that large, personally, I'd be getting it scanned asap.

I agree nikita it's what happened with both my gsd. No symptoms until rupture
I would def have a scan so u can at least see what's going on
booked in for 27th April. soonest they could do!

Hope it helps and you find out what's going on
So the U/S showed spleen all ok BUT did show a cyst like structure or a mass within a cyst 7x10cm on his kidney!
kidney blood test was normal and took a fine needle biopsy from the cyst so just need to wait and see.
They have said about further investigation but at the moment I need to see what fluid biopsy is.
We agreed unlikely cancer as he is asymptomatic plus if had since October I am sure we would be seeing other symptoms with him.
Vet said they don't often see cysts in dogs on kidneys.
