Health / How long does the BVA take to provide hip and elbow scores?
Hello, we had our Golden Retreiver bitch x-rayed on the 3rd of November 2020 with the x-rays immediatly sent electronically with the fee to the BVA. We were told to expect some delay due to the covid 19 pandemic. How long does it take for the BVA to provide results. Please only reply if you have experience of sending x-rays to them since October 2020.
Best wishes
Peter

I know alot of people are still waiting for theirs Sent in Aug. People I know who had their results back this month Sent them in July.
At the moment, around 5-6 months and it will probably only get worse because they are not meeting or sitting at the moment so the backlog is only increasing.
Many people are sending them to the Australian KC for scoring, since they are still meeting and they will get a score back to you within a week. Whilst they may vary from the UK scores, I think it will be clear if a dog has abysmal hips, decent hips or great hips from the Australian system so if you don't want to wait, that is definitely better than breeding without any scores. You can find more information on FB in various groups.

The Australians use the same scoring system.
Of course you can still submit the same x-rays to BVA too.
The Autralian system is not the same totally - scores will be lower than with BVA but it's a good indicator for breeding. There's been dogs scored both with ANKC and BVA where the Aussie total was 8 less than BVA so you do need to look at the breed average for your breed in the ANKC not the BVA one to get a good idea of how the score stands

I realised that there was some variation on strictness of the grading.

Just to confirm that the ANKC consistently scores lower than the BVA, so people should be sure to check their breed average in Australia as well.

How interesting Springwell. Is there a way of contacting/sending The ANKC our Vets Xrays for analysis?
A previous poster suggested we could do both with the turnaround of ANKC just being a quicker indicator.
I would recommend the OFA in the USA although you only get excellent, good, satisfactory etc, should get them back within a few weeks and KC recognises the result. If you visit the OFA website it’s just an alternative form your X-ray provider/vet needs to complete and email with the xrays. Note that pre 2 years old it’s classed as a preliminary result though.

Thank you so much for this info. It's about time we had some alternative resources. I am due to have my lovely girl Beau's Xrays done and this
might well be the way forward in today's climate (she is 18 months old). Useful alternative should things continue at a snail's pace here.
Been waiting 5 weeks now for her DNA Tests. Lighter note: Happy New Year!
Yes, you can send xrays sent to the BVA to ANKC - they must be DICOM format. Your vet should be able to send these to you and you can submit to the ANKC yourself (there's a list of scoring vets on their CHEDS website). Cost is $100AUS (about £58 for hips and elbows)
Yes I’ll be getting mine done in April and I was considering paying for both BVA and OFA seeing as the OFA is so much cheaper! That way at least I’ll get a quick idea and can start thinking about plans for next year. I’ve also just sent off for DNA by Embark in the US as they offer a genetic COI and I’m really interested to see if my theories are right ;)
And yes happy new year everyone!
> KC recognises the result
Does KC really recognise the result? (Ie print it on Health Test Result Finder?) My understanding is that the KC only recognises BVA results... you can use other systems but would need to email puppy buyers the results just like we used to do about 10 years ago...

If you get hip and elbows done by anyone other than the BVA whilst the KC can log details, more so as an assured breeder for records they won't go up onto mykc or on their database. So if people use an overseas dog or import one which has been scored overseas you won't see those results on the kc site.
I’m basing it off the accepted health test provider page but the website is now so unfriendly to use of course I can’t now find it! As you say though now I think about it I’ve not seen imported dogs’ results recorded. Nonetheless where there is another body owning the monopoly and as health results are no longer on pedigree certificates, if it helps obtain a faster result to make decisions with ill still be using the OFA scheme.

Your advice is greatly appreciated and I have already done a little bit of research. It seems the UKKC are receptive of results from abroad and as you quite
rightly said, official certificates shown to potential new owners are as relevant as KC BVA site results. It just means that you must explain the scoring
comparisons by Country.
I would say as breeders, it gives us a fantastic advantage even though we will be paying 2 fees....better than waiting an 'eternity' with uncertainty.
New recognised procedures are the way forward and will undoubtly become the norm in the near future. "New Blood & all of that" as in business.
Totally agree and as you say, across all areas of business the more on offer across the spectrum of breeding services, All the better to offer customers more choice and stay competitive

Springwell:> they must be DICOM format
Thank you for your advice. I will be on the case with my Vet on Monday. Sorry but I am no 'techno' buff. What Is DICOM format?
& CHEDS website? (wish my daughter was still at home to advise!)

As there are a lot of imports/overseas studs in my pedigrees I have always compiled my own with health tests included, no matter which scheme.
For the DNA tests I use letter codes and colours with a key.
Now they are not even going to print UK health test results on KC reg certs, a really retrograde step.
Their excuse, you can look it up on their website!!!

Hi All
So pleased I stumbled across this thread as have been waiting for results since September 2020. I’ve just had a look at CHEDS and on the form it seems to suggest scans need to be posted on a disk or memory stick, I was a bit surprised by this. Is that what everyone is doing?

I can so sympathise. It's at the point of the rediculous now between KC's New Site, BVA turnaround time and even Wetherbys are now inundated
and advising 6 weeks minimum.
Just had my results come through from August 2020.
I have my Vet looking into the format requested by ANKC/CHEDS and as soon as I have a response I will post on here.
Just hope all the Breeders who have litters years between start the testing process perhaps 12 months in advance if things continue
or they may run out of time with their girls!

I have aleays hip scored mine byb18 monthsso probably around a year before a first litter.
DNA testing a lot sooner.
It's those contemplating breeding after a few years of ownership, that might be embarking on testing later, especially those with potential studs.
The biggest problem for those breeders I know is getting an eye test.
Fortunately both known eye conditions in my breed are covered by DNA tests, but our breed club still require eye testing for monitiring purposes, in case a new condition manifests.
I know of several breeders and stud dog owners that have had several appointments cancelled. Most of them needed new tests due to prevous onrs expiring duebto putting off matings last year.
Thankfully the Club are agreeing to a temporary amnesty, if you have tried.

My eye tests have been cancelled for this month. God knows when I'm going to get those done. They were due in October but that session was booked up months in advance and Jan was the earliest I could get. We shall but wait patiently.

Brainless:> The biggest problem for those breeders I know is getting an eye test
After 3 cancellations at my Veterinary Hospital (140 mile round trip), I am still no further forward
as to when these tests will be seen as priority. I fear the current situation will continue for some time.
> The biggest problem for those breeders I know is getting an eye test.
The eye tester Wales has now retired so god knows where I'll get mine done there's none listed in Wales now.

I get mine done when they reach a year, club rules can't breed girls before 2 so gives me plenty of time. DNA testing breeders in my breed have been testing litters before they go for the one test we have.
Thank you everyone! My vet has forwarded the x-rays to Dr Jen Richardson in Perth, Western Australia. I'll let you know how I get on.

Things have started to move again. We have had a number of hip and elbow scores added to Champdogs recently. The xrays for these tests were submitted in September.

Yes their continuing to meet during the lockdown to try to clear the backlog while they shouldn't be having any now ones coming in.

Hi guys can someone tell me or provide info where to X Ray Elbows Hips and all health test OCD genetic tests etc for my German Shepherd 17 months. I d like all to be approved by SV Or done under SV German rules. Ideally don't send me to Germany as I will if I can't find here but it must be somewhere in UK.
I m not doing for breeding just for me and for IGP dog sport.
Many thanks Dan

Personally I would have
PennHipped at 4 months & then done the elbows at 12 months.
The SV scheme doesn't give as much detail as either PennHip or BVA schemes & the beauty of PennHip is that it can be done so much earlier.
Any vet who regularly submits plates to the BVA & takes quality X-rays should be willing to submit via the SV, but PennHip has to be done by a specialist as it needs difference positioning of the dog.
Several labs in UK do full panel DNA testing for all breeds

I recently used
Wisdom for dna health testing, it was a good service.

One of the GSD breed clubs should be able to direct you, I can remember a post a while back about submitting to the SV German scheme through a breed club a while back. I don’t know if they do OCD, I think OFA do.

The SV certainly do ED scoring

They do indeed, but OFA has a shoulder OCD screening scheme.
