Topic Dog Boards / Health / Malaseb for flakey skin and scratching
- By lkj [gb] Date 19.01.23 07:47 UTC
Once again a new vet is treating my 10 year old dog with Malaseb for flakey skin, scratching and redness in certain areas. She is going twice a week.  This has been tried before at other vets.  Has anyone reading this had their dog treated with Malaseb?   What should I expect?  Over night the room is covered in flakes again just like it always was without the shampoo. I have told the nurses and asked how long the treatment is for.  I have got to speak to the vet in 2 weeks time.

I've used it but only as part of other treatment . In our case it was to help calm the skin due to allergies.
Tbh i didn't see any immediate changes . Sone dogs skin find it rather hash a d ut doesn't help but can make things worse.

Surely u arnt having to go the vet just for that treatment? We did the weekly baths at honey unless that isn't possible for you

Did use it years ago it was prescribed for yeasty, red inflamed skin, realise all dogs are different but wouldn't touch it again. it's very harsh & stiped their coats of natural oils, on the last occasion had to re bathe both boys as they were visibly uncomfortable & yes had rinsed & rinsed.
Recently had a similar problem with our boy & was prescribed Douxo S3. it immediately soothed & controlled his condition, when I joked about my experience with Malaseb the reply was we don't touch it these days.

Yes I've used it for my Bassets when they (some) had Malassezia.  However, for mine, it was far too harsh and left them with very red skin.   I turned to DermOp which was more gentle and as I recall, successful.

ps  I just looked for a link to DermOp but can't find one - perhaps it's been withdrawn - I did use it quite some time ago now.

Thank you for all your replies.  Just back from her bath.  Did tell nurse about the flakes and redness.  She thinks Tuesday and Thursday too close together so trying Tuesday and Friday. We are  booked in to 3rd February.  I shall try and insist on Douxo S3 as it is recommended by other vets on line. She has to be bathed at vets at moment but I think local groomer might do it if once a week.

There is often an underlying reason for these allergies.
Has anyone suggested looking for the reason ?
Very often it can be as simple as a change of diet and going grain free ( Rice is also a grain).

Chicken is a common allergen as well.

Douxo S3 as it is recommended by other vets

Far less expensive, if purchased from suppliers on line.

Zymox is another option, they do a shampoo.  Brilliant products.
