Topic Dog Boards / Bring and Buy / Tailgate guard needed
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 16.01.23 17:22 UTC
I had a near disaster this pm after being at the vet's for Mojo's vaccination update.   I was closing the tailgate and he managed to dive out, and ran down the lane from the vet's and out into the traffic in the middle of town.  Talk about a heart-stopping moment.  Luckily the traffic stopped and a really kind young man joined in the chase and eventually cornered him for me.

Unless I can somehow anchor him in the back (I do have a crate I could put in the car but have yet to get him to go in it in the house), I'm looking for a second hand tailgate guard for my Peugeot 2008, September 2015 regd.  I can't afford to buy a new one, looking at the Banjo prices (more than I paid for him) and Guardsman don't seem to do what I want.

He's a very loving boy (at the moment lying on his back on his bed, after his tea) but didn't respond to his name or either of us calling him at all.  Blind panic.   I have never had one do this before.

Where are you?  Marketplace on facebook is always worth keeping an eye on (I found both parts of the inside guard for my new car the weekend I got it, although I've still got to pick them up!) and there's one listed in Trowbridge, albeit with missing feet.  If you're not on there I could keep an eye on it for you.

A tailguard is the first thing I buy for a new car, I wouldn't be without one.

Check the fleamarket on agilitynet, it's a great place to pick up a bargain tailgate guard. If they don't have one listed for your car you cna post a wanted ad, it might encourage someone to sell one sitting in their garage.

We are in a coastal town in the backend of nowhere - Bude, N.Cornwall.

I will keep a look out....... I obviously have to find a way of anchoring him once onboard.  Talk about a heart attack moment.  If it hadn't been for the YOUNG man passing by at the time, goodness knows how this would have all ended.

I haven't, so far, got into facebook so if you, Nikita, see anything advertised, please let me know.  I'm afraid it has to be used, price-wise.

It's not ideal but what about a long lead attached to a seatbelt in the meantime.

We have a lead that has a large loop at one end that goes over the rear seat headrest with a clip on the other end to attach to the dog. It is adjustable in length so it can be made long enough to allow the dog to move around to get comfortable.

We do similar although one car has metal clips that we can use to attach the lead.
It stops brooke getting out of the car before I am ready. Although I do still use the wait command

Thanks so much Jodi.  I have just bought!   Now how best to persuade him to put his front feet up on the bumper so I can heave his back legs/body into the car without a 'fight'!!  And also to know what WAIT! actually means.  I had Frankie do that with no trouble at all.   I will attach the lead to the back seat anchors.  At least that won't break the Bank eh.

Much appreciated

Oh and some bright spark in the vet's yesterday said 'you can't teach old dogs new tricks'......... hopefully she's wrong    Also Richard vet said 'he has a lot to live up to' (re Frankie!)  He's not wrong.

Maybe get a ramp. I just bought a nice one if amazon for 31 pounds
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 17.01.23 14:34 UTC
Hum.   After we lost Frankie, I donated our car ramp to whoever might use it c/o my vet.    I do have a small one but it's not long enough for the car, just for the two steps to the backgarden, which so far, Mojo doesn't need.   I'm not sure he'd accept using a car ramp in any case!!   Anything remotely unknown and so 'scary' and he slams on the anchors (other than running scared around town!!).  This is NOT a temperament I'd have been happy to produce.

It may come to a ramp, for the sake of my back.
