Hi
My 11 yr old miniature poodle has developed a recent cough. It first started as gagging, retching from her throat and as a week has gone on her chest is started to sound raspy when she coughs. It’s worse at night and she is trying to find some comfort by sleeping on a mount of pillow and blankets to keep her head above her chest height. It started after about evening walk last week through a leafy area know for loads of sycamore helicopter seeds so not sure if she has swallowed one.

She has had a vet visit and currrently on anti inflammatory for her sore throat and antibiotics.
Vet initially suspected kennel cough but the other dogs in the household are not coughing. So this maybe ruled out as KC is very infectious.

Googled a few symptoms and cardiomyopathy has come up on my radar with very little treatment.

Has anyone got any advice for me? She is generally very healthy x

Sounds similar to what we had and vet did mention that if she didn't respond to same treatment as u have had we would look at heart.
No other dogs around her were had any symptoms either
Good news was the treatment worked and she recovered . Hopefully u will be the same .
All in all don't panic

I had a golden retriever diagnosed with an enlarged heart (DCM) at about 11/12 years. She was coughing sometimes and had a sort of feinting episode. The vet thought laryngeal paralysis and took her in to test, but it wasn’t that. He took an X-ray to check her lungs and that was when he saw the enlarged heart. She was prescribed a water pill and a heart pill (can’t recall the names offhand) and she did amazingly well. The vet said to let her do what she wants rather then restricting her and there were several times my heart was in my mouth when she took off after a rabbit, but she seemed to know how to self regulate herself. She lived until she was 14.5 years.
Of course it may not be DCM so try not to worry until she is diagnosed. It’s not an immediate death sentence and the right drugs can help enormously although it can’t be cured

Just thought I would post a quick update.
Luckily it seems a short course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory tablets has sorted my girl out. She is much better x
