Topic Dog Boards / General / Flights for my GSD from UK to EU and back plus owners
- By Dan Lucian [gb] Date 11.05.22 10:08 UTC
Dear all do you have any ideas which flights and what are the options for flights from UK London to Europe?

We want to travel with our dog all together not separate.

Which companies and info about routes.

Thank you for information and suggestions

Dan

Is there a reason why you don’t want to/can’t drive over? I’m guessing you already know they would need to fly separately in cargo.

Where are you wanting to go to in Europe?

Is fine for France Germany but I was wondering if there are other destinations and flights.

I can drive and I m quite happy to drive with him and family but for Greece or some other places I can't.

Who shall I ask? I have asked airpet to see about companies and flights.

I always drive with mine. Flying your dog goes in the hold and it does take some time to get him back after the flight. Also be aware that the animal reception centres charge a ridiculous amount for opening his crate and checking his chip and paperwork, almost £500 on top of flight fares.

Here's a list of airlines and airports you can use.

Your dog will have to go in the hold when flying in and out of the UK. Domestic flights within mainland Europe is different depending on the size of the dog. I can't see you being able to take a GSD onto a flight and sitting with you though, too large

They van go in the Cargo hold as 'Checked. baggage' and therefore be taken in at check in and delivered to baggage claim.

This is not only cheaper but time. and logistically  better for dogs and travveler.

It's  a case of finding which airlines will do it.

Yes I won't let him without me and wife so car will be. He has all the large boot secured and I wonder if he is still growing or not

Checked baggage is the way to do it if you can.
Shortest time away from you.

Unfortunately  back into YK it's  extortionate. Cargo.

That is why when I last flew. I did checked baggage out of. UK,  and the same to Brussells and arranged to drive back to UK.

That was still cheaper than Cargo.

On top of that the dog spends less time crated.

To be honest, I forget exactly what happened but this sounds like what happened when I flew with a 4 month puppy we'd bred from Gatwick to Geneva  He was in the hold and I can't remember a delay the other end.  I had to pull up my French much as I think the guy handling my lad was having fun watching me struggling ()  and certainly spoke better English than I spoke French!   As I remember, we flew BA.

GSD's won't be fully grown skeletally until around 2yrs old so he still has a lot of growing to do

As Suejaw said he is still growing, If your boy is about 8mth old I kept a record from last GSD ... 8 mth he was 24" at 2 he was 26.5", weight was 33kg up to 42kg age 2 so you have a bit to go yet.

Similar with my gsd fully mature around 2 he was about 45kg. Cant rmener his height but he was tall which I partly put down to genetics but may also have been because he was neutered at 10 months due to retained testicle . If I knew then what I know now I would have left that until later but vet scared me not current vet
