Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sore Carpal Pads

Hi All, My 14mth old GR has skinned his carpal pads while out having fun & racing around with other dogs. Can anyone advise best home treatment for this?  He is licking them but doesn't seem to be causing him any real discomfort.

Just bathing with epsom salts (or regular salt water) and a bit of vet wrap round them when out until they heal again.

Try not to let him lick them too much. One of my labs constantly used to tear her carpal pads up. I would spray leucillin on them as it doesn’t sting but is an antiseptic. Then I leave them, the best thing for pads is to let the air get to them as they need to dry out and not be too moist.

Is this the first time it’s happened or does it happen often? In the end the only way to prevent our girl from doing this, it would happen every few weeks, was to buy these https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/509661990/dog-stopper-pad-carpal-pad-protectors?click_key=cc7729d1c0d7301c6b8fc6931ec08b6a97e805ed%3A509661990&click_sum=81b94844&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=carpal+pads&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&sts=1

Usually used in sports like agility etc but honestly have saved her and hasn’t had an issue since.

We have only recently started visiting an enclosed paddock to get rid of some of his energy, he loves meeting up with the other dogs & thats where it happened. skins them every time.  I had brought & started to use Leucillin & was considering buying some cuffs.  I think its going to be an ongoing issue with him.  Thank you so much for the advice, very much appreciated :)
