I see pictures of people leaving Ukraine with their dogs, but does anybody know what's going on re people with kennels etc.  Because of somebody here who imported from the country, I know of at least one Basset Hound kennel out there and fear for how they are coping.

The Bernese Mountain Dog club posted this on Facebook. Maybe other clubs are doing the same ?

The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Great Britain are so saddened to hear about the current situation in Ukraine and the destruction, devastation and uncertainty currently faced by the Ukrainian population. As a breed we have fellow owners, breeders and exhibitors caught up in this turmoil with their beloved dogs. A fund has been set up by Bernese lovers in Europe to help the Bernese community in Ukraine by providing dog food, medical/veterinary supplies and transport.
Given these unprecedented and extenuating circumstances, as a Club we are desperate to do whatever we can to support, therefore we are donating £1,000 from our Rescue fund to go towards helping those dogs in desperate need.
We will be undertaking fund raising for this cause at Crufts and will have donation buckets for cash and can take card payment donations at the ringside breed stand. We appreciate any support Crufts attendees are able to offer. If anyone would like to donate directly then please use the PayPal link @donateukrainedogs (the fund specifically setup to support Bernese owners/breeders in Ukraine)

I understand over £8000 has already been given.

That's great, hope all breed clubs and general dog clubs will do the same. I did see a post on facebook, a breeder looking for accommodation out of Ukraine for family and several dogs, I think they were vizslas. I know a few breeders in this country who couldn't fit all their dogs in one form of transport, presumably the same there and that would create a huge problem, not to mention finding somewhere to live with them all. I guess bigger breeders will be stuck in the war zone and need as much support as possible.

I think I will send an email to the people who imported a Basset from Ukraine and see if they know what's going on with that, and other kennels and if help is being offered.

I know of a couple of Moscow watchdog breeders in the Ukraine that I've spoken to before the war started. I've no idea how they're doing, there's no updates on their social media pages and I feel like I'd be burdening them to reach out.

That's such a wonderful thing to do, while the rest of us sit safely behind our pc screens. Do you have a just giving page or a way for CD members that wanted to help to contribute financially?

I did contact the people with a dog from Ukraine but they bought him from a man in this country, so have no idea what's going on with that kennel in Ukraine.

No Just Giving page. My daughter works for OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) in Warsaw and she recommends Polish Red Cross and Unicef and other Disaster Relief organisations. That is what we have done. Money is desperately needed for medical supplies and other essential needs. I am taking sleeping bags and hopefully medical ( non drug) items that are needed on arrival. We are close to the station where trains from the Hungarian/Ukraine border arrive so will be able to offer showers, clean clothing, a meals and short term stay. We only have one bedroom so it will be a squeeze.
i have put up a post about dogs, highlighting of course that humans need to be given priority but will do what I can.
BTW Don't put yourselves down for 'sitting safely' It is hard to watch. I have to turn off from it all.
I have a wonderful lady coming to care for Freya and puppy. The other dogs are going down to Eastbourne to be cared for by sons there. That is not going to be easy for them but tough! It's a war.
I am just hoping that LNER passengers will be tolerant of our dogs and luggage on the train.

British Red Cross for donations as well.

Respect to you Jan! Be safe.
I've been meaning to send some money so your post has prompted me to send a donation to the Red Cross

Yes, I've already donated to them and will do so every week while the need is so great.

That's an amazing thing to do.

Fully agreed. We're all dog lovers but people must come first.

> I am just hoping that LNER passengers will be tolerant of our dogs and luggage on the train.

I'm sure the most arrogant of them will change their tune when you tell them where you're going and for what reason.

Replying to all above.Thank you  I feel very humbled and will do my best. For all of you with contacts with dog owners escaping from Ukraine please feel you can give them my email address -jan.bending@yahoo.co.uk.

My landline number in Hungary is (00 36 1 302 7650) My mobile number will not work from mobiles in Ukraine. We only have a flat on 1st floor so could not  accommodate dogs but I will do my best to find people who could at least accommodate short term. I could do meet and greet and help with transport.

I can only be in Budapest initially from 21-31 March but can return late in April. But while I am there I can hopefully rally help.
Again I cannot promise but I will do my best.
If anyone on the forum can offer me advice re different breed requirements that would be very helpful

That is amazing.

Have not read all the details yet but will do and donate

Watching those people over the past weekend, more and more with dogs, trying to escape the bombing just makes me weep.  Somebody had a bag with a litter of very young puppies in it, filmed yesterday.   And then there was the Peke trotting trustingly along with his/her owner.    So trusting.

It's also possible to donate money via Nectar points if you download the app.  So far on the DEC and one other come up for helping Ukraine.

Also possible to donate in support of Ukrainian people and their pets escaping to Romania https://www.1dogatatimerescue.org/ukraine/
(They are set up with facilities there as they normally rescue Romanian street etc dogs).

(I found the info about them on another forum, where they are asking for help with transporting several tonnes of donated dog food to Romania at the weekend. I don’t know if anyone here can help or has contacts who can help with transport and/or paperwork?)

I have no connection with this charity.

Just tagging onto this thread.
I am wondering what CD members think about the government's (belated) initiative to offer homes to Ukraine refugees.
It is a huge topic, I realise, which perhaps should be a new thread. It is also possibly too sensitive and controversial. But thought I'd ask anyway.

I'd like to hope that those with more than one main home (!) would open the doors to these people (with no descrimination against DOGS!).   However, and I too realise it's a sensitive topic, I hope that the necessary checks are going to be made before just throwing open the door across our borders.  It would be all too easy for somebody to say they are Ukrainian, when fact is they are not - and potentially looking for a way to get into the UK for all the wrong reasons.  It is however, to be hoped that the checks are done as quickly as possible.

Poland is to be congratulated for making it possible to open closed stores so these poor people now have heating, light, bathing facilities and so on rather than having to live in tents.

Personally I think it's a great idea, we have to do more to 'do our bit'. I think it not only saves the tax payer money, hotels would cost far more but it's also going to be better for traumatised refugees to be part of a family I would think.

I would hope for stringent checks both ways, with modern slavery on the increase I'd hate to think of some refugees ending up in worse situations, but for the majority I think it will work very well. I've offered a spare room for a dog and cat friendly person.
- By Honeymoonbeam [gb] Date 16.03.22 19:31 UTC
We've also offered a room, preferably for someone with a pet.  At the moment I don't think the system is geared for people who don't have direct contacts with people in Ukraine but I know someone who is trying to host a family she has known for 20 years and if that comes off she will ask them if they can recommend someone for us to offer a room to.

Unfortunately a lot of animals are suffering there. Few big zoo asking for help as they didn't have chance to evacuate the animals.
