Topic Dog Boards / General / Rabies jab - passport or vacc card

If you travel abroad with your dogs where are you recording their rabies boosters now? I no longer have vaccination cards for my oldies, can I continue to use their passports simply as a record of vaccination even if they're no longer valid as passports? I assume that they must have some sort of official record of rabies vaccination status to get their health certificate to travel.

We also have a youngster who doesn't have a passport, does his rabies jab get listed on his vaccination card, and does anyone know if they accept that at shows in Germany? They usually ask for passports to check them.

UK passports are no longer valid and vets aren't allowed to add to them any more; any future rabies vaccinations have to be recorded in an ordinary vaccination card. The alternative is to get your dog/s overseas passports when you're over there before their boosters are due.

Too late to edit the above to add that if you manage to get them passported overseas then you won't need to get an AHC each journey - they can travel freely as before.

Have a read of the DEFRA site

Thanks Jan, I didn't know that.

I don't think you can, it says that EU passports issued to owners resident in the UK are no longer valid.

Presumably the vets can give me new cards then when they get their rabies boosters.

I have read it many times, it doesn't answer all questions, but thanks

I would still love to hear from someone that has shown in the EU recently, as to whether they accepted the vaccination card instead of passport for rabies proof, presumably they have to.

When I took 2 of our dogs to Europe on the AHC last summer, our vet took photocopies of our vaccination cards and stapled those copies into the back of the AHC. Then she stamped and dated every page of the AHC - including the copies of the vaccination cards.

Yes, any rabies vaccines are now recorded on the vaccination cards. But the vet who gave them will also have a record in the medical notes/computer database of giving them, and should be able to provide evidence of that if required or if you mislay the vaccination cards.
