Just wanted to know - do breeders tend to get a lot of extra interest from potential owners enquiring about pups after Crufts ?
The reason i ask is that there are one or two posts on the board who mention they have watched Crufts and fallen in love with one breed or another and so i was wondering whether there was a lot of interest after the Show ?

Hi,

I do, I have had quite a few people phone and enquire about pups after crufts people sying 'I've seen xxxxxxx at crufts and would like to know if you have any pups available

We had quite a few people enquiring about our pup at Crufts this year, mainly from US and Oz, they all took photographs when he won his class. Sorry to disappoint NOT FOR SALE. No doubt they will get in touch with his breeder.

yes, but from past experience, the ones who "fall in love" at crufts are not generally suitable for my breed!

I'm one of the ones who went to Crufts and fell in love, but I haven't phoned any breeders about any pups. I really want to do my research first and know as much as I can about the breed before I make a definite decision. Otherwise it'd be like walking past a petshop and just buying the dog because it looks cute.

thats what concerned me the fact that people are sitting at home thinking " oh isnt that nice - i want one "
and thats no disrespect to the poster above . Its one thing doing homework on the breed and another just going and getting one purely because you think its pretty or whatever

People who have actually gone to Crufts, often have gone to help make up their minds about which dog they are going to add to the family. At £11.50 to get in plus £6 petrol, a lot of people make this their final decison making opportunity, and it is spring when a lot of people think it an ideal time to aquire a pup, iwth increasing day length, and temperatures to ease house training a pup.

the enquiries for our breed following Crufts are usually serious ones, but not many.

I did discover dogs yesterday, and by mine and my freinds reckoning there was one definate potential owner of the breed for a pup, one probably, and one who wanted a rescue.

There were probably another half dozen who if a pup had been immiediately available would have bought on impulse, but pups in my breed are usualy not that ready to have off the shelf.

People will either be lucky to get on the end of a list of a litter just born, or on the list of a litter due, as first few pups in most liters are prebooked, and the ones left are usually where one sex has predominated in the litter.

I used Crufts/Discover dogs to pick Mals. We went to DD one year and just generally looked at all the breeds, asking questions about any we liked the look of. At home, we cut down to a "short list" of about a dozen breeds. Then we did a year of research via books and internet before going back to DD to make a nuisance of ourselves with the four breeds we had chosen to think seriously about. After asking an immense amount af questions, we then attended Crufts a few months later to look at the Mals in the ring and see which lines we liked the look of.... and only then did we approach breeders and ask to visit them and their dogs.
So, I think that DD and Crufts is a great help in finding your new family member - if it isn't the only research done.

I wish every one was as sensible & thoughtful as you.

Having done lots of research on two breeds (staffies and ridgebacks) I went to Crufts on saturday to see them show and talk to people who know whats what and found everyone really helpful. I absolutely love the look of Basenjis but could never have one, the breeders have got to make sure they seperate the people who "impulse buy" and those who, within reason, know what theyre getting themselves into.

15 years ago I went to Crufts and fell in love with the Spinone, I've been researching the breed ever since - maybe one day I'll get one........ :-(

Hi,

Myself and my partner would like to get a Mal but as Joan said, alot of research has to go into carefully choosing the breed you want and seeing if you are suitable and are willing to put in the effort and time required to train them. We have been researching as much as we can about the breed and went to Crufts to see all the different lines and to speak to the owners that were there.

We are still trying to find out as much information as we can before we start talking to the breeders whose lines we like. As temprement is a huge factor in our desision (we dont have any children but any dog we had would be socialised with children, under supervision of course) we thought that Crufts was a great place to see so many Mals and to guage how they reacted.

I understand that a lot of people who went to Crufts would just fall in love with a breed and want to buy one on impulse but their are also people (like us) who have done alot of research into their chosen breed and as Crufts is such a big show, have gone along to see the different lines within the breed and to meet as many owners as possible.

Phil

ps - We had a great day!!!!! Shame the Mals were so late in starting though. We got there at 8am and left at 8pm  Mind you, one consolation in leaving so late was that the car park was empty and no ticket wardens were one the gate :D Shame we bought our ticket when we arrived in the morning :o

for people looking for pups in other threads i have advised going to crufts and talking to breeders .You can get a wealth of information from a breeder
I just feel uncomfortable with the thought of joe public sitting at home suddenly thinking "Oo I'd like one of those " when previous to watching the show they may not have shown any interest in getting any dog .

I am pleased to say that I am in a Breed that only comes into season once a year and by the time crufts comes all the puppy's have been sold only 30 being born this year, so anyone wanting a puppy will have to get on a breeders list, and wait untill dec--Jan next year. The dog's must know this stop's inpulse buying!!!!!!!!

Hi Lel,

I agree with you that there are people who do see a dog on the tv and want one on impulse :-( I should think it is usually the BOG or BIS dogs that get singled out for the attention. The puppy farmers must have a field day if one of the breeds they have do well and get noticed :-(

The point I was making, was that DD and Crufts are great ways of general research for the initial selection, for talking to breeders/owners about the characteristics of the breed and finally, Crufts is great for looking at lines you are attracted to once the breed choice has been made. Unfortunately, you will always get people who turn up, see a dog they like the look of and immediately say "I want one of those!" I think breeders have to be so careful to find out how much research into a breed has been done.
I have to say, that even though we did our research, we couldn't have forecast the change in our lives since owning Mals. We wanted a pet but now do showing, rallying and have met lots of great like-minded people :)

Imagine saying "I want a dog that I saw in the BOG"!! :D :D
Sorry...... I know its serious :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.03.03 11:57 UTC
I suppose, technically, you would say "I want a dog like the BiG dog" - confusing if it's a toy!! :D

Hi would just like to say that i was due to pick up my dog after crufts on sunday,i had already had contact the the breeder for 2 months before,we would email an phone.I had already owned a dog of the same breed until it died a year ago.We were so exited about getting it as it was showing in crufts but we we bying it as a pet,as the breeder felt he wasnt getting the attention he needed one 2 one.We booked a hotel for saturday night and husband, son an myself went to crufts on Sunday we were then rudely met by the breeder who seemed offish an had a very bad attatude an also her daughter. So off we went to enjoy the day an wait around for her to ring when she was ready. She never did,we were phoned at 4.00pm after she had left crufts by her husband on there house phone to say that the dog was there daughters an they hadnt told her it was being sold, and then blamed me for talking to there daughter an saying that after crufts we were looking forward to taking home the dog.Not once in the two months before did she mention this was the case. What a day a waste of time an money I was so upset an so was my son.I wont mention the breed or breeder (AS DONT WANT TO GET INTO TROUBLE)but they are well known in the breed.I know not all breeders would do what she did but to people falling in love with dogs at crufts be carefull and watch out as some(not all thankfully)breeders seem to think there god.Any how i dont think i will find the dog i am looking for now ,as i had told other breeders with pups thankyou but i have found a dog.How wrong i was.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.03.03 21:09 UTC
That is a terrible shame. If the breeder had second thoughts about letting the dog go, then they should have been up front a lot sooner, and not diasppointed you like this.

I hope the new pup you get goes on to beat the C^^p in the ring out of their stock. If you weren't planning on showing maybe you should!! :D
