Topic Dog Boards / General / English Labrador Vs American Labrador

Is there a big difference between English Labradors and American Labradors?
It sounds to me as though the English type are the typical show type, with the American being the typical field type.

Interesting discussion below

Reading through most of this article, it appears to spell out the differences between the two - but end of the day, as said, there is only one Labrador Retriever but with country variations.  I found Labs in Canada had slightly 'alien' heads.

Re the chocolate Lab - some years back now they became all the rage with many BYBs breeding the colour because there was a market amongst the 'yuppies'.  My nephew and his then family bought one but by the time he was around 8 - 9 months, he'd had both hips and one elbow operated on (I felt their vet was rather money oriented).  Sadly he had to be nurse through all that, which with a young family, wasn't easy.  He was never really 'sound' and didn't live for as long as he should have.  Sad but my nephew went ahead and bought before, having asked me for names of breeders, I could get back to him.  In fact he was actually with a local breeder and buying a puppy!

Americans may separate the two into American and English but in this country the show labs are often stockier than working lines but if u look at the breed standard there is only one standard regardless

I am sure the lab knowledgable people will give u more information

Like here they have 2 types of Labs, there shouldn't be any different because there is one breed standard and that doesn't change much between countries. What we have is show or working lines and the US have the same but they call them English or American lines.
The dogs in the show ring here and the US are very similar though any in the US are probably way chunkier, fatter in some cases and very deep in body, not all though. The Americans call them the English type. Our working/field lines which are very slender, less bone, narrow heads are what the Americans call the American type.
There shouldn't have ever been a split because when you breed you should be breeding to the standard not way outside of it and sadly this is where the split has occurred. Extremes either way from the standard are incorrect.

There is a similar difference in golden retrievers in pretty much the same way as Suejaw has described.
The American Golden is a little taller and straighter with a narrower head, less angulation particularly on the hind and a dark gold longer straight coat, pretty similar to working line goldens over here. The Canadian golden is also slightly different and more like the US version.
In the US ones coming from Europe (not just the UK) are referred to as English Creams whatever colour they are although they are mostly lighter coloured.

Over there, english labs are our show type and just "labrador" is their field type.

Their labs can be highly driven hunting dogs too and larger than ours, rather than being more placid retrieving gundogs.

The terms used in the US and UK are different and it's all a bit confusing.

In the US, English lab = show bred. American lab = field bred. For extra confusion, some breeders in the US have imported UK working lines and they call these 'British labs' to differentiate them from American labs (US field lines). Honestly, it's all the most confusing pile of steaming smelly stuff.

In the UK, we just say show bred and field bred or working.
