How do i go about getting an affix, I have been to the Kennel Club web site, Where there is a book on affixes, do i have to buy this? , to get one.

Hi, you dont HAVE to buy one, but there are so many affixes that the chances are that all the ones you choose will have already been taken if you dont get an Affix book to refer to. You can sometimes get a name very near the one you want by spelling it differently. It takes a few months for the names you have chosen to be approved/rejected, as it has to go through a committee meeting - I think there is one every quarter. You need to think of several names - I think it is 6 - make sure you like them all!! Sods law always intervenes and you will be granted the one you wrote down in desperation cos you couldn't think of another one you liked!! They are threatening to put the charges up - so dont delay!!

It's a £45 fee at this point and when I spoke to the woman at the KC to get a form she looked up the name that Jon wanted and said that it was not currently registered. She also told me that I did not have to put more than one name down and said they would contact me if there was a problem.

HI Sierra, sorry about the error message e mail - dont know what happened there! Sorry if my info was not correct, a friend recently wanted an affix and the KC wouldn't tell her if the name was already taken and told her to order the affix book!!

Its always the same with the Kennel club depends who answers the phone:D

**winking** sometimes the American accent works to my advantage I think! I actually had three questions that day and the person was extremely nice and patient -- I wanted to know about changing a dog's name, getting an affix and finally in adding the affix to the changed name (if possible) after getting the affix!! Though to be fair, everyone I've talked to at the Kennel Club has been extremely helpful and patient in helping to explain the differences in regulations.

Your info was really correct; I just thought that the person would like to also know the fee involved. It's really unprofessional of the KC not to check to see if the affix was already taken -- it took less than 60 seconds for it to be verified. Guess they just want additional revenues from selling the affix book.

Up to last Summer everything Westie lover said was correct! 6 names had to be submitted, and it is always advisable to have the affix register so you don't choose one to close or identical to another. As someone else said-it depends who answers the phone! I take it you will be getting a form to fill in, I would wait and see what it says on the form!!!!!!! Bet its 6 names though :)

it is six name i got the form today you put down six names in order of which one you want the most and then they look at three and try to get one of them but if not they then look at the other three. it would be a lot easer if when you phoned they could say if the name you wanted was gone as i phoned last week and they said i have to fill the form in, but if its like you say diffrent people will tell you then i might phone again.;)

Yes, the form had six places for names to be submitted. However, the KC rep was very specific and stated that if I only wanted one name and would not settle for others to simply send it in as such and they would notify me if there was a problem. That was over a month ago and still no notification, though I have received other information and documents back that were sent in at the same time. So, I'll just wait and see.

If you have submitted an affix it gets published in the next available issue of the Kennel Gazette. In effect it could be a couple of months before it makes the Mag. Then anyone who wishes to object has a chance, if all is well you get told which name you can have. The whole process takes 3-4 mths. (or did! Bit out of date with precise time span now) Then , when you have your lovely new and expensive affix you have to spend another small fourtune adding said name to your dogs! (if you want to, but seems pointless to me to have an affix and not use it!) :)

Unfortunately you cannot add your affix to your dogs name if it has already won an award qualifying it for the Stud book. someone in our breed hadn't got round to doing it with her new puppy when she got her new affix, and he then went and got the RCC from the puppy class!

I have one of the new affix books (although it's about two months old and already well out of date), so if you have a name in mind, e-mail me, I'll have a look in the book and let you know whether it's taken.

I was granted my affix last year. Yes I had a form with 6 boxes in - they chose my third choice. I realise now that I should have done six variations of spelling of my favoured name.

Yes it cost £45. It took 4 months to complete. £6 or £7 each to add to my dog's names AND if you fill in the direct debit form they include, a further £12 to maintain your affix or £15 if they remind you each year, otherwise you lose your right to the name! tsk! what a money spinner eh?

An alternative to an affix: A well known breeder, Susan Baird in my breed (whippets) just gives her dogs her initials. So she is presently showing Shoe Buckle and Silken Bustle, whose mother is Storm Bird... gettit? as she has done this for all her litters over the years, everyone recognises dogs with these initials as being hers - brilliant! and free!!!! lol :)

Good luck whatever you decide to do!
